As a side-note, I would not be so excited to participate in any venture, whereby the gains are expoited by multinational giants - Cargill or pharmaceutical giants. Get the drift. So rest assured.
Think of it as PPI public-private initiative

There are many diseases out there that do not get attention from drug companies because the R&D costs are high and the returns are uncertain. This is actually a major problem because life could be improved and the abilityto solve these problems is there but the focus is not. The drug companies want to concentrate on a few areas with assured returns.

If its drug research i think chances are good it will be public, and by that definition any company can utiltise the results and innovate on top for profit. This is pretty much the model we've had going for a very long time now.

Its more of a BSD style licence than GPL.

Most of them are some protein based projects. Protein = drug based research right?

Not really, protein is almost "everything based" research. Your are just thinking it from a nutrition/medicine point of view.

Most of the info in the wiki wrt protein was on some drug based research. That's why I asked the q.
I guess that's what is important to us, drugs make diseases go away / make them tolerable. Whatever research we do, ultimately the aim is to improve the quality of human life.
