Hi,

I am in urgent need to external HDD. I have shortlisted Western Digital My Book Essential External HDD 1TB from letsbuy. (for Rs. 3549/-)

Following is the link:
Western Digital My Book Essential External HDD 1TB – Buy Latest Western Digital My Book Essential External HDD 1TB with Cheap Deals
1) Is this HDD good? Is there any negative point about this drive?

2) Somewhere on the net I have read that 1 TB USB drive are not worth and instead 500 GB HDD should be purchased? Is it so?
( Review in this link Amazon.com: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive: Electronics)

3)Does lack of firewire and SATA connectors make any difference?

( I am not sure if this particular model is USB 3.0 enabled or not...)

Please help guys I need to purchase and have the product delivered by this Thursday...I have run out of space on my computer and my existing 160GB external maxtor HDD :(

LetsBuy is not fast with shipping... they will take their time... I ordered some stuff last week & even after a week there is no update about shipping... So don't count on them that they will deliver by Thursday....

USB 2.0 is painfully slow for a 1TB HDD.. that's why people do not prefer it... On the other hand you cannot upgrade this HDD to USB 3.0

first of all,
1 TB is too much.
500GB is ok.

so now that you will take 500GB,
there are two forms.
one that need external power adapter, and another that dont need external power supply.

if you are goin for the ones with external adapter,
this is what i would suggest.
1. Buy a 500GB SATA II WD black Rs 1700
2. Buy a Frontech SATA HDD case Rs. 400(max, do bargain)

total = 2150

balance = 1850
even if you want 1 TB you can get it within 3500 :D
DO NOT GO FOR POCKET DRIVES. they arent very usefull and the frontech one really gives a long power adapter cable.. :D

if you want speed, get one with an eSATA

USB 2.0 transfer speed will peak out at 30mb/sec

I have 1.5tb external HDD and it works well for a storage solution. If the slow transfer speed does not bother you then its a good option.

have a 1TB and 2TB versions and they work fine as long as u dont throw them around. My 2tb one has surpirisingly good transfer rate and the 1tb one has a descent one. if u are goin to use it only for backup (I actually cant think of any other use for an external drive) than this drive is best for you.

@de.das.dude : From which online store or place in Delhi I can buy it for the price you have indicated? Is there any name for the model you have mentioned like My Book Essential External?

The reason I am going for letsbuy is that I am getting it for cheaper rate. (I have Rs. 500 discount coupon). So, I am getting 1 TB for Rs. 3499 (actual price Rs. 3999).

For more than 4 weeks I am waiting for some coupons/deals on ebay, but did not get any. Infact, when 1 Tb was featured in their weekly deal its price was Rs. 3888. :(

Price of 500GB hdd on letsbuy is more or less than price of 1 TB. Even on ebay the price of 500 GB is around Rs. 500 less than the price for which I am getting 1 TB.

One more thing, won't the slow speed issue will also be with 500 GB? Does the speed reduces with increase in storage size?

Unless the drive is heavily fragmented there should be no slowdown. I have almost 1.3tb data and the read/write speed has been same from the beginning.

Such drives are good for data dumps since most of the time you will be only accessing data after its written.. Only when you write on these USB 2.0 HDD's that you will feel the pinch of slow speed... They will surely take a lot of time to write data to but then who does that every now or then on a dump drive..... You write on it & then its only used for accessing (1TB+). For lower capacity drives which are generally used for moving data around USB 3.0 or eSATA would make sense...

With a discount coupon it surely is a good price but you will have to wait ~10 days min. for delivery. :(

By the way its actually 450/- bucks off... remember you paid 50 bucks for the coupon...:P

Yes, effective price is 3549. This is the lowest price I am getting it for ( if anyone know any other place from where I can get it cheaper than this I am ready to try). My friend has reliance mobile, but not sure how to get 15% off offer on letsbuy. There customer care is also clueless about it.

Anyways, I called up letsbuy customer care and they are saying that product is in stock. I should let them know after making payment and they will try to deliver within this week. I also found oot the exact model numberof this 1 TB wd :: wdbai0010hbk_sesn

I need it for taking backup of family photos/ videos, my movie/TV series collection, documents, software etc. At times connecting it to computer or HD media player to watch movies/ photos stored in it.

My computer has run out of space and and my existing external 160GB drive is full. So, need help.

So, with given price should I go for 500 GB which is around 500 less or buy this or buy anyother make hdd.

WD claim to have home pickup of drives if any issue.

Go ahead with your purchase.... You are not going to get it any cheaper, any time soon... eBay coupons have dried up so its your best bet for 1TB... Accessing external HDD on USB 2.0 isn't a problem & you wouldn't notice much difference since its only for backup... :)

Guys, have received my WD HDD today at around 1:30 PM. ( I placed the order this Monday night). :) :) I am happy and impressed my their service.......I was expecting Thursday delivery, but got the product delivered day before that...

Now to the product itself..The adaptor I have received is made by 'Ktec'. Does WD HDD comes with this adaptor?

Also the adaptors pins are not like what we get in India. I am unable to plugin the adaptor in power socket. Doesn't WD supply the adaptors which can be used in india?

Whoa... that's fast shipping.. There is no info of the orders I placed 10 days ago... :(

First of all check the WD site for warranty status to be sure that its indeed with Indian warranty.. If its not then you can contact WD with bill copy..

@HailStonE : call their customer care executives, they are helpful...

Can someone please help me with WD issue I have mentioned above??

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

I managed to get the adaptor work by attaching the 'indian style' plug on in. ( doesn't WD comes with 'indian style' adaptor).

But when I connected the WD to computer, it gives hissing sound for 1 min. White lights in the front keeps on blinking and computer is unable to recongnize the drive. I also tried to connect it to my acryan playon!HD player, but it is also not recognizing the HDD!!!

Am I doing something wrong? How to make these drive work?

Today one of the item got shipped.. I'd contacted CC ~3 times earlier... they were mostly clueless about exact shipping time..

@mohit1981... Post some pics buddy of the package, box & everything..

^^

No WD, iOmega and a few companies don't bundle INDIAN socket adapter with their drives SEAGATE does :)

You'll need to install the bundled propitiatory software that WD bundles with their drives

Since morning I have made 3-4 calls to WD customer care number. I told them about the hissing sound. They said that it may be due to some hardware issue, and product need to be replaced. :(

Imagine the product not being used even once, and it need to be replaced. ( I checked the warranty status using serial number, it is valid in India for 3 years)

I am sending back the entire product along with the adaptor for replacement. I have specifically told them that I don't want the refurbished one. I am told that new replaced product will come from Singapore.

Is there anything else I can do to ensure that I get the brand new product as replacement and not refurbished?? What are my other options

@ HailStonE's: Sorry buddy, by the time I read your reply, I already re-packed it. So, not able to take the photograph. The packaging was good. The outer wrapper was much like the ones we get when we order from ebay (sliver inside). HDD itself was in sealed box, which in turn was wrapped in 'bubble packet'. It was delivered by 'Aramex' courier.

@ALPHA17 : there is no software CD that I received with the product.

The WD software is on the HDD itself so if it not getting read then RMA it ASAP don't worry sometimes people get a bad egg even on a new buy, I bought a ATi HD 5770 last Jan <2009> it died in May due to build quality error where the heatsink was 1~5mm above the GPU chip so heat was not efficiently being conducted and the card :dead: so RMA-ed it took less than 2 weeks and a month in totla for me to get a brand new HAWK edition in RMA cause I am a student and couldn't go everyday to check on status :)

Don't worry, they'll give you a brand new drive again. Must've gotten damaged during shipping to you. WD is great that way.

As far as the power adaptor is concerned; yes, it is from K-Tec and most electrical sockets available these days (especially from Anchor) support the 2 prong plug that comes with the WD drive.
