With the advent of the Like button, I feel very few reps are being distributed. One likely reason is that the Like is easier to click than giving a rep, which is a two step process also involving some effort (comments).

Is it possible to replace existing rep functionality with a single click rep/unrep button akin to the Like button?

Yep I noticed the same and informed the Admins that the rep button isn't too visible, plus the 2-step process.

I was thinking a Like button that combines reps would be good.

We're still seeing how to go with this :)

@eddy, thanks mate.
And yes i too feel that the like buton over-shadowed the rep button :(. Any way to redeem likes for reps :P

Where is the rep button? I don't see any..
It is there in the tech sections. Left bottom of the post, next to the report button. Looks like a bloated star / setting icon. I have put its location in my signature :P

the sig is not valid in every section :P
But one click button will risk accidental reps. So i dont think its that cumbersome for the precaution it offers.
Also, abt the like button overshadowing rep button.. marginally true but still preferable scenario. And nope, the likes MUST NOT be redeemable for rep points. Will defeat the whole purpose.
One cannot enjoy the benefit of rep points for making a post which only had an anecdote mentioned.

The "Like" button is the best thing that has happened to TE in a long time. It truly is a great feature and enables members to appreciate good content posted by other members and thus encouraging them to post more.

Infact, I was thinking, just like no. of posts, the no. of likes a person has received should also be visible. I know we can see it in the user cp but making it visible to everyone would encourage people to post good content in order to accumulate likes.

^ Exactly, "Like"'s simplicity makes it immensely 'like'able. However, this count isn't represented anywhere. A visible indication like you mentioned would be good.

+1 to that, i agree to this making it public would be a good choice
@mods, now we need a like-meter :P

Many members here would argue that making the "Liked" option visible would somehow lower the value of reputation, while this maybe correct to some extent, it is important to implement this new feature for the greater good. For example - a new member who is not very reputated can still be well liked in the forums and this would only boost his confidence to post more good content. Remember, the point here is not to add another gimmick feature but to encourage members to post quality stuff.

the Like button is available everywhere while the Rep button is restricted to only the Tech sections.
you can see the names of members who liked a particular post, while repping is visible only to the receiving member.

'Like' is/was added by the Admins as a test feature to improve the forums.

Giving more visibility to the 'Rep' button will increase its usage.

If the 'Like' counter is added, it will display the member's overall contribution while the 'Rep' bar displays only the technical contribution.

^^

I understand the concept very well. Although Like and rep are available in same sections

So again. Whats the difference between them.

People give more likes but that is not visible beside the username.

People give less reps but that is visible beside the username.

Now how ironic is that!

Do you really understand the concept? I don't think you do, or else you wouldn;t have asked the same question twice. :)
