in a nutshell what you require is a good firewall which monitors your outging & incoming requests.

if you using windows xp, then the xp firewall should take care of any outgoing requests. just make sure your firewall is enabled. & be careful on what applications you allow net access.

zone alarm is the one of the best firewalls around. this is a basic version, try it first, its free, no trial period.

there many other firewalls around & some antivirus software also have basic firewall built into them.

win xp fw doesn't monitor outbound traffic, afaik.
imo, u'd be better off with ZoneAlarm

you are right :cool2: , but by simple act of not allowing incoming connxn, your system is not compromised, even if there has been a unauthorized outgoing request from ur computer.

so vivek the moto is to have multiple layers of security checkpoints...
a) xp firewall
b) firewall (zone alarm)
c) anitivirus software (nod32, kaspersky)
d) anti-spyware (lavasoft adaware, spybot s&d)

in no particular order to make your system foolproof, also always have latest updates.

But wont installing a firewall decrease the download speed and also the browsing speed? Torrent clients usually advice to disable the firewall to get good speeds...

and is Zone alarm light on the system?

A good fw will let u control all programs' net access. So, u can infact increase ur bandwidth by denying unwanted/unnecessary programs permission.

Most Torrent clients do advise disabling fw, but iv personally had no probs with bitcomet+zonealarm. In any case, u can perform port forwarding.

ZA is pretty lite - takes < 6MB. It does take a little getting used to, but worth it, imho.

well, what if a trojan horse / keylogger is passively reporting ur passwords to the big bad h4x0r ?? :P

also, all those security software will hog a lotta sys. resources, may occasionally conflict wid each other (xcept anti-spy). better to hav a single solution which does the job...imho :)

the question is why would you download that keylogger or trojan horse :cool2: , with a tight setup  , your antivirus or antispyware would surely alert you to its presence ;) . not all trojans try to establish a direct connxn via a port for your firewall to step in(thats why i told its best to have multi-tier protection, i think the worst kind of offenders always hog your browsers cache)

i disagree on single protection, most keyloggers, trojan horse would be piggy banking on some other application, so without a anti-virus and anti-spyware you will be fooled into allowing access, so all applications do there own job, its better to have specialists than a all in wonder :)

as for system resources, i always have antivirus & firewall enabled, every few days scan my system for spyware, this is a neccesary evil, better safe than sorry.
about download speed, if its coded right they are supposed to do it unobtrusively with a minimum impact on your speed.

vivek, good programs never ask you to disable your firewall, its like asking for a persons locker key :( some applications just have to be setup properly like torrents, i use bitcomet with nvidia firewall & its fine.

ok one more thing, try to check how good your firewall is, try this, it was posted before on techenclave.

^^ jus' to clarify, i mean a single solution in each department (xcept anti-spy) ie. 1 av, 1 fw, ...

all-in-one solns generally suck.

well, nothing is perfect... what if the av fails to detect the trojan? No AV has a success rate of 100%. This is where a fw monitoring outbound traffic would come in use. :)

In my opinion the best for this purpose is naviscope.A handy little tool that i have been using for many yrs now.

It displays all request being made like those by realplayer, wmp, microsoft, msn toolbar and stuff that usually u never know. The best part is that with a single click u can stop these request. Also u can save on load times and increase ur dload speeds by good use of this program since suppose a site loads its gif logo or other standard graphics and pics u can stop that too manually the next time u visit that site with this program.

thats why i listed, four-tier protection :hap2: :hap2: including your favorite outbound traffic tool zonealarm

Guys i had installed PC Cillin 2003 and so Zone alarm does not install.....

Sify requires u to install one of the 3 antivirus softs.. NAV,Macafee or PCcillin... so i had installed PC Cillin 2003 and then deleted the installed directory and then installed Computer Associates eTrust antivirus....

Now what should be done to install Zone alarm... is there any other firewall as good and light as Zone alarm?

keiro personal firewall + Sysinternal's TCP View + Spybot Search n Destroy or Webroot Spysweeper + AVG Antivirus or Kaspersky Anti Virus + Syslog daemon for Windows

Regards.

dunno y no one mentions OUTPOST.
acc to me its the mother of all firewalls.
its tough if u r new to it.but once u configure it......theres nothing better.
also has a great online community forum.
think they recently released a free version also.
so its kaspersky+outpost+adware for me.
also u can BLOCK UNTRUSTED Ip's through its blockpost plugin......which means no need to use Peerguardian.
