Guys!!!

I have a serious problem. I was in the process of arranging and cleaning up my HDD. (I have an 80Gig and a 160Gig Hdd). I transferred a folder from one Drive to another (from a partition in the 80Gig Drive to another partition in the 160Gig drive) The copying process went well and I could access all the files in that folder.

But after i restarted the system - when i try to access the folders it gives me an error message saying that the folder is not accessible. I get the same error message even when i connect the HDD to another computer. When i go to the properties - it shows the folder size as 0 Bytes, but when i check the partiotion properties - it shows that the folder is taking 8GB of space (The actual size of the folder was also 8GB)

Is there anyway through which i can access the folder again?? It is terribly important!! I cannot afford to lose that data.

Thanks a looot Guys!!

Edit:

Was tense and forgot to post some details:

Operating system: Windows XP SP2 (with the latest updates)

Anti-virus: Kaspersky

Other major Applications: Acrobat Professional and MS Office

There was nothing else running while the copying process was going on.

Before you do anything else make a backup of the partition which has this corrupted folder because it is likely that you may loose stuff on this partition during the efforts of recovering the folder. In this way if you do have any more problems you can restore the backup and try again.

All the best recovering the corrupted folder - one question are both partitions the same ...namely... NTFS or FAT32 ?

Both the Partitions are NTFS.

I tried using Acronis, and I am able to access the folder and view the subfolders and the files, but when i try and copy them from the browse window, i am not able to do.

Any further help will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot once again :)

I use Acronis True Image for my daily backups. :)

I am not sure if you meant the "Explore Image" option which opens a File Explorer - I use this often to retrieve files when I need them from a backup image. Is this what you meant ? All you need to do here is right click on the folder and then open Windows Explorer and there paste the folder to another partition.

Have you made the Acronis Boot CD - boot to Acronis via this CD and see if you can retrieve the folder.

Are there any compressed partitions on your setup - I feel this could be a cause of the problem you are having.

i hav a similar problem... in my case, it came about while using Partition Magic 8.

I was merging partition E: into D: . When asked to create a folder to store contents of e: on d:, i specified the name "e". Sure enuf, after the merging was done, i had the folder "e" on d:

However, trying to access / delete / ... the folder leads to a folder accessibility error.

Luckily, e: was an empty partition, so i can afford to ignore the folder, for now.

It should get taken care of in da next format ;).

Still, it would b nice if any1 can help me get rid of this :)

EDIT : Win XP SP2, D: - NTFS E: - FAT32

its a permissions problem and u have to change the permissions...this is done in two parts

part1: to turn off simple file sharing

-Go to 'my computer'
-go to tools >> folder options >> view
-uncheck the last option that says "use simple file sharing"

part2: to change permissions

- right click on the reqd folders and go to properties
- go to the security tab (this shows up only after part1 is completed)
- go to advanced
- in the permissions tab click on ADD
- in the new dialog box enter your login name/ user name and if the username exists, a new window will open with permission options.
- check the ALLOW option For "Full Control" (this is on the top of the list) and click ok.

u should be able to access it now.

P.S: u MUST log into windows as the administrator

Dude.. Argus... Agreed.... Working great tooo... But there is a new problem. I can access the folder but now i need to make these changes to each of the subfolders and files manually, and it is a big pain considering the fact that the folder size is 8GB and has over 400 folders and 8000 files..

Any way to do it all together?? I tried to change the setting for the entire drive, but to no avail. I am not able to access them unless i apply it to each file..

Help needed once again...

well if the others dont come up with an easier solution, try PC Inspector. Its a free data recovery software.

I ran into the same problem last night. Backed up my important files from the C: drive to the E: drive into several folders.

Once I had re-installed my system (Win XP SP2), I could no longer access anything on my E: drive as I kept getting "access denied" errors whenever I tried to open any of the folders. I have done this dozens of times over the years, and beats me what happened this time.

I Tried a couple of things I read here and zhopudey's solution solved my problem, and I was able to recovered everything.

thanks
