was thinking of buying this ... any reviews or experiences with it ...

any better ones that you can suggest in this price range?

I bought a similar Sony one 2 months ago, and I've forgotten the model #.
Anyway, I had a tough time finding the model I wanted as I preferred a phased out model, simply because the newer ones don't have Nightshot and they cannot shoot in pitch darkness (0 lux).
Anyway to answer your question, yes the Sony ones are good value for money, the closest alternative are the Canons I guess, but again they are hard to find in India.
The newer compact HD cameras are an option too, if you're not too particular and can do without some of the features found in traditional camcorders, most are priced around the same if not cheaper.

The model that you've selected has three variants 67E/85E/87E. The only difference between them is the HDD size - 40/60/80 Gb respectively. The other major difference is that the 67E has 5.1 surround sound capture.

In terms of price range, Canons are another option but they only have flash memory and do not have HDD based cams in India. For 21.5K you'd get FS100 i guess and then you'd have to buy a 16GB SDHC card. Sony are reputed to be n00b friendly.

I've reportedly read somewhere abotu the Super Nightshot in Sony's HDD model, although cannot remember whether it is for these models.

I too am thinking of getting myself one and have my eye on 67E (with 5.1 ch sound). Ideally I'd have wanted to get a HD resolution cam around 25K but theres nothing available in that budget.

The dealer's warranty is just 1 yr as against 3 yr provided by Sony officially. So this may well be a gray piece

would it matter if its a gray piece or one with bill ? i have not heard of any gray pieces going bad ...what do you guys think?

just got Sony Dcr-sr85 from a friend in US for 15.2k... It is same as the indian version(Sony Dcr-sr85E)1ly difference is fat\ntsc. It is very compact n fits ur hand good.
