hey ya fellas,
my friend wants to start his own server.... from where he can share stuff...
some what like what his cabblewalla does...

the basic infrastructure is already present.. cables/lan etc
now i wanna know how to start a server

first the hardware required(he only has a laptop so needs a computer to run as a server)
ALso the software required..(eg using dc++ etc etc)

thanks.

Well...its not going to be a resource hog and probably only going to serve a couple of PC's at the max. I would suggest something along the lines of a

P3 733MHz

512MB Ram

80GB hard disk for storage

This will also work well as an internet server/download machine/cache server for your lan.

Dont get a monitor or other extras. Use a spare optical drive to install and remove it.

Raghu.

Raghu config is good for a file server (though I'd recommend atleast 200GB of storage)

I'd actually recommend the Dell server for 15k which comes with a Pentium D 820.

Absolute VFM ! Add another 160GB drive + 1GB RAM and your set :)

hmmm well cant his comp become the server on his lan like the cabblewalla is?

he already has a monitor from his previous comp.(that got screwed in the 26/7 rains)

he would be serving like 30 odd people... ? . so how to go abt that?
