Don't invest money on craps. If 10000 Rs is not a big amount for you and you feel very rich,go experimenting on that china PC :p

Could be a Via or Atom based system.

Would be weak on processing power, but just enough for internet browsing, office and basic stuff.

Not too hard to do that here as well.

Intel D425KT - 3k

DDR3 2GB - 1k

80GB HDD - 1.5k

Keyboard/mouse - 0.5k

Total : 6k

^^^ Even I am thinkin of getting the above config for a general purpose rig.

Will this let me do the following stuff,

1. Web browsing - Heavy content sites, flash, webcam chatting?
2. General MS Office use, editing docs, simple xls, ppt and also PDFs?
3. Continuos Downloading. The low power consumtion will help right?
4. Video Playback - what videos can it handle? I am not too much into HD, ocassional dvd/dvd rips work?
5. Can it handle photoshop for RAW processing?
6. Can it handle AVCHD video conversion and viewing?

I know few things would not be possible. Please provide your inputs...

speaking of a student pc, where is the display device ?, that would exceed the 7k range.

@op, get a second hand p4 machine instead of these chinese stuffs

^^
Second hand p4 machine may be on it's last legs (components would be old and not so reliable), so not a good idea really. Better to invest a couple of Ks more and get a proper low cost PC instead.

You do know where the second hand P4 machine was made, right? :p

I assume the OP was talking about systems minus the display. An LCD would definitely eat atleast half the 7k budget.

I however missed the cabinet/PSU, so add another 1k there.

1. Heavy content sites - a bit sluggish, Flash - will struggle (Flash 10.1+ has GPU acceleration on the nvidia Ion platform), webcam chats - will be fine

2. Should be fine. PPT and PDF - a bit dependant on the content.

3. Fine. Yes.

4. DVD rips yes. HD rips, no. Again an Ion based platform will offload some of the video decoding and manage x264 HD rips, but those boards tend to hover in the 6k range (?not sure), making it no longer a cheap rig or the AMD Brazos platform a better alternative.

5. Yes, but really slow

6. Likely not
