Hi,
I'm searching for a cheap wifi router for home use which can be upgraded with custom firmware. The area to be covered is approx. 1200 sq. feet in a single floor.
Budget is about 2K max.

I've shortlisted the following:

Linksys WRH54G
Buffalo G125
Buffalo WCR-G54
Belkin F5D7230ak4
D-LINK DIR-300

Pls suggest guys.

My suggestion for cheapest solution would be:

Asus WL 520gU @240Mhz, 16mb RAM, 4mb flash

Buffalo WHR G125 @240Mhz, 16mb RAM, 4mb flash

Linksys WRT 54G @200-240Mhz, 16mb RAM, 4mb flash

(V4.0 or lower)

Using Buffalo WHR G125 for past 1.5 years or so. Installed Tomato only couple of months back.

Also setup a Asus WL 520gU for a friend remotely with Tomato to overcome torrent throttling by ISP.

I got a D-Link DIR 300 for around 1600 its only compatible with DD-WRT but it gets the job done, did look around for other routers but they were above the 2K mark so settled with this one it gets the job done pretty well you could look at the thread I started here

Can you help with the approx. price?

Dont know whether WHR G125 is available anymore but it cost me around 1800. Asus one would cost you around 2200 or so via KMD. Linksys is a bit costlier.
My suggestion would be to go in for Asus one if Buffalo isnt available locally.

I think I have seen it under $40 at times during sales. Wouldnt that cost roughly ~2200 considering KMD is giving us 10% at the moment?

Nope.

Multiply the rate by 1.6 to get the approx final price for you (this includes KMD charges, shipping charges etc.). Apply 10% discount to this.

So if the price is 40$ - then it comes to 2700 Rs.

BTW:

How is Linksys WRH54G? Any use review?

A model of Buffalo (WCR G-54) is available in the market for around 1.5K. No good review is available in the web.

Here is the spec:
Buffalo Inc.

Here is the only review:
Buffalo WCR-G54: A Mini-Review - BNC eXtreme Edition

What do you think guys? Is it worth purchasing this?

Also, how this one looks like? It has good range - but no custom software is supported. Newegg has good review though.

TL-WR642G

Newegg.com - TP-LINK TL-WR642G IEEE 802.11b/g Super G & eXtended Range 108Mbps Wireless Router - Wireless Routers

Stick to the G125 itself if you need custom firmware options. It should still be available, I know someone picked it up 2 months back for ~1.7k.

No - both are not supported.

However, for basic use the Belkin F5D7234 (1st one) is good enough. I'm using one for last few days borrowed from my friend.
