Suggest me a DSLR

Body;

- Budget anywhere between 20-60k

- comfortable and relatively lightweight; I liked the nikon d40/d90 for this aspect

- prefer a lcd display that can be swiveled(like the canon 60d) as I'd prefer not to lie prone on the ground or crouch to get the perfect angle :D

I prefer to get a single lens (say 18-270mm) with IS as I am a clumsy person and will probably end up damaging the lenses and camera if I keep changing them while outdoors. If that option is not vfm then I can go for whatever combo you guys can suggest for general purpose usage. Budget is 10-40k.

Also suggest a vfm tripod.

I will mostly be buying locally or from ebay.

Models I am currently considering are the canon 60d and the nikon d5100.

Yeah Canon 60D is a better bet with a Canon 18-200mm IS lens. Will be slightly above your budget but it will tick mark all your requirements.

Dude if you can spend 60k why even bother to look at the entry level models?? ~.~ Of course high end ones will be better than the basic ones.

BTW, i'd suggest you to go with the Nikon 3100 for around 30k flipkart

^^ suggest me a suitable 4/3rd model and I'll readup on it. Requirements based on my digicam(canon s3) use are an Articulating screen(which eliminates d3100/550d and other even cheaper dslr's) and a decent zoom range.

If you want zoom range in any ILC cameras you need to spend additional money to buy a tele zoom lens.

If you don't use the viewfinder then its better to get cameras which fares better with a lcd such as the m4/3 and NEX ,or the Sony SLT.

I do use the viewfinder in the majority of situations but I am certain that there will be a fair number of cases where the articulated screen will come in handy.

The 600D coupled with an 18-200 IS or the D5100 with the Nikkor 18-200VR would do the job, no? The combos should cost around 70k for both the dslr kit and 18-200.

For the body you are good with a Nikon D5100 as it has good noise performance....if you are considering to shoot some video footage go for the Canon 600D, the video quality is amazing and Canon lenses are a bit more pocket friendly than Nikons.

^^ yeah, I am planning on getting the 600d with the tamron 17-50 lens(42+23 = 65k approx). I have been trying out #sajitsm 's 550d and the addition of different aspect ratios and articulated screen were the only things I found lacking in it which is addressed in the 600d.

Btw is there a type of lens that doesn't focus sharply like digicam lenses? I can appreciate the 50mm prime lens for its fast focus and low light performance but the when taking casual photos with many subjects the shallow dof is a definite disadvantage. Is the only option to reduce aperture?

I am not an expert but having said that going for a 600D over a 550D in my opinion makes absolutely no sense. Both the camera's have almost 95% of their features identical including the sensor which I believe would be the most important part of any camera. Yes it is different for a 60D though. Now the 550 D body is available for 32.5 compared to 45 (min) for the 600D. I would say get the 550D and if you have the cash go for some good lens. Two differences I noticed were one the swivel screen and two the aspect ratios including 16:9 which are not there in the 550D. It is 3:2 only in the 550D

^^ You forget that the 600D has a commander flash mode which is found only in the semi-pro and pro cameras. Also the body is larger with a bigger grip. And I wouldn't dismiss the articulated LCD. It can really open a world of some really creative compositions that is very difficult to impossible without an articulated screen.

Trust me I miss the articulated screen the most on my cam, its extremely handy for taking shots with a different perspectie. And as Brendon stated the commander flash mode is a huge bonus if you plan to buy an external flash gun.

@Brendon...You are the expert. For a beginner though the price difference of almost 14000 less for the 550D is tempting
