Hello TE members,

As you might know we have a template for Buying advice section that has to be used when asking for advice:

Template for "What Should I Buy" - use this when asking for advice.

I was wondering what changes could we make to make it more user friendly, so that even newbie find it easy ask for advice. changes could be reorganisation, adding new questions, deleting existing questions, changing existing questions etc.

For example, According to me following changes should be made as given below.

Slightly tweaked template

  1. What is your intended use for this PC/hardware?

Ans: enter all the tasks you plan do on this machine? Like Gaming, watching movies, programming, internet & email, office work etc.
  2. What is your budget?

    Ans: Enter budget in rupees.
  3. How long do you intend to use this PC/hardware.

Ans: Enter the number of years of usage. No upgrade or changes planned till that date
  4. Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.

Ans: Let us know, so we will suggest alternatives;)
  5. Are you looking to overclock?

    Ans:
    1. Yes

      [*] No

      [*] I don't know what is overclocking? Please explain:ashamed:

  6. Special Requirements: Anything else you like to add?(Optional)

Ans: Anything that would aid us to suggest better configuration for your needs. This may include
    1. you have already decided on a configuration then please mention it.

[*] Any Existing hardware you plan to use with your new system. Mention it

[*] Looking for used hardware? YES/NO

[*] If this going to be a gaming machine:

      • What games you to plan play? enter few names
      • At what screen resolution you plan to play those games?

[*] Is this machine going to be used on any other OS besides Window 7 If yes, then mention OS name. so that we may suggest compatible hardware.

What you all think? Please post your suggestions. Lets brainstorm :ohyeah:

I prefer the current template as it much more detailed and answers all the queries a person suggesting might have in mind. (at least for me)
If one needs good suggestions then he should take the time and fill it up since that eases the job of the person who is suggesting the rig!
Explanations for the questions can be tweaked and order also can be tweaked a bit. But i prefer all the questions to stay put as each one of them is relevant.

I too would agree with darky here gaurishbhai. I think, I have used this template twice in past here, and it covered all questions and details I wanted to ask for suggestion.

Agree with DA and Crossbow there, though one can always improvise it with time if a suggestion is really good.

3. How long do you intend to use this PC/hardware.

Ans: Enter the number of years of usage. No upgrade or changes planned till that date

Above is an impractical question, most cant pin-point and answer to this and expecting them to do so would be too much.

^ or we can make it optional.
Yeah. As it is, members who suggest configs/components do so keeping in mind upgrade-ability/reverse compatibility/imminent release of newer tech, so i thought the question would be not required.

If anyone has worthy suggestions on this topic, now is the time to say.

FYI, All worthy suggestions will be implemented and DarkAngel will have a final say in this matter:)

Makes sense but taking some feedback is never bad idea. If none of the suggestions are actually good, then we can stick to current template:)

The current template is great, What I would love is informing the members about the questions in the template, What I mean is the following,

Q: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage
Gaming - 1280x728
Desktop - 1440x900

Q: Are you looking to overclock?
Yes/No

A normal guy who just uses his computer only for playing dave and browsing ie5 would'nt really know about , adding in a wiki link , or even asking the OP for the monitor model+make would make better sense.

Adding a wiki link, or even a link to a google search result would help the guy answering, and then would make the process more efficient.

Do not want to buy Asus product as I heard the after sales service in India is pathetic
Some of the questions+answers need updating, just a thought.

( I say this because I had a friend who wanted suggestions, in the end, he found himself not knowing what to answer)

All in all , just a few tweaks here and there, and viola your'e done !

It might be a bit stupid (my suggestions) but that is what I feel needs to be done.

:cool2:

Maybe add in a question for the download pattern like how much time do you keep your pc On for downloading.
This way a hardware with less idle power consumption can be suggested or a bigger hard disk can be suggested.
