Superzoom from Singapore / Malaysia?

I will be in Singapore / Malaysia very soon, and was planning to buy some 'stuff' :D My major requirement is that of a super zoom. Going through multiple threads here seems to suggest FZ35. However, a few threads also state that it is out of production.

I have a budget of 20K, and was curious if these cameras are cheaper in either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. In addition, are there better alternatives to this camera in my budget?

You might want to have a look at the new models from Panasonic FZ40 and FZ100 along with Canon Sx30. I had hands on with all three yesterday and they are good in what they do. FZ40 is the cheapest of them all and gives a good balance of features, zoom and picture quality. Selling for 350$ in Oz if imported from Hongkong. In store its around 450$

Thanks guys.

Aren't the FZ40 and FZ100 considered 'upgrades' to FZ35? I haven't been able to find a lot of reviews around them, but after their launch, the price of the now defunct FZ35 seems to have gone up. Does that indicate that the newer ones aren't probably that good?

Checked out the FZ40 in Mustafa. Costs 21K with case and 8 GB card. Way too higher than the US price (16 K). I get Indian warranty though. Should I go for it?

Indian warranty? how?

fujifilm H10 is available for 21k in letsbuy.com (after 10% discount). Try h10 vs fz40

FZ40 is the upgrade for FZ35 and FZ100 is an TOP END Model of FZ Series loaded with lot of features and options. well if you look at DMC-FZ100 | PRODUCTS | LUMIX | Digital Camera | Panasonic Global you will come to know why i am suggesting u to go for FZ100 ! if you get the FZ100 with 8GB(sdhc class 6) for 21k then you can go for it bcz its almost 30k in Ebay(india) now.

u can go for it bcz its almost 30k in Ebay(india) now.

But what about warranty? if one is buying from out of India, say Singapore or US ...

can one get international warranty i.e. warranty coverage in India too??

Although The FZ100 has great features (CMOS sensor, Mechanical shutter, 11FPS shooting)....the picture quality is not as great as the fZ35.

If you are looking at overall features, good video recording, continuous shoot, u can go for the FZ100.

If pictures are your only thing then stick with FZ35:)

^ Thanks for your input, but I just returned from my trip and have already purchased the FZ40. :) Couple of reasons - the price difference between the FZ100 and FZ40 is close to 5K, and also, FZ100 wasn't available at all (competitively price) dealers. In addition, I am really a casual photographer, taking out my camera mostly 2 - 3 times a year :D FZ35 almost seemed to be extinct when I searched. Prices in Singapore - even before the GST refuned - seemed to be close to 3K lesser than what I saw in KL. Came as a bit of a surprise really since I was expecting lower prices in KL.

congrats :) how much you paid for FZ40??

Thats not very cheap for a FZ40, we get the FZ40 here for 300$ + 30$ shipping in Australia, but with vendors warranty. If u have got international warranty then its good. Do share your experience with us as i am still confused between F40, FZ100, SX30 and HS10.

U should check the international warranty that is given in Singapore:)
I was screwed backwars in my ACER deal when I later realized that the warranty that I got was actually an 'International travellers warranty' which required me to have a Singapore valid address, WP or Visa to claim warranty:(

I presume you are talking Australian dollars. If it is indeed 330$, that is the same price as in the US. From what I have heard, Australia isn't as cheap for electronics as the US. So that's definitely a great deal. This camera is also available in India with a 1 year dealer warranty for 21K. For the case and 8GB card (which was what I also got for 21K), the price is 25K with 1 year dealer warranty in India.

As regards comparison, I could not compare this with any other model simply because they were not available at the dealers. The SX30 was just not available in any of the shops I checked in both Singapore and KL. The FZ100 was available in a couple, but they wouldn't let me demo it. Finally went with gut feeling and brought the FZ40. Thankfully, haven't been disappointed till now :) The major difference I see between FZ40 and FZ100 is the ability to record 1080p videos in the latter as against the 720p, and I am not much of a videographer or photographer for that matter, so the price difference of around 3K between these two models wasn't justified in my case. That said, whatever videos I have shot on the FZ40, look great on a 32" atleast. Will try to upload one sometime later this weekend.

Hmmm... I need to go back and read what's on the warranty card. I bought this from Mustafa, and am assuming they wouldn't be fooling customers. Let me update on what I see on the card :)

The diff that u pointed out is not even close to the major difference b/n the FZ40 and FZ100....

in terms of specs FZ100 kicks the ass out of SX30 so much so that its not considered as an upgrade to the FZ40 but a different genre all together

FZ100 has a CMOS sensor (rare feature in a non DSLR camera), mechanical shutter (again rare feature in a non dslr camera), large amount of manual controls and give u 11 frames per seconds pics which means u can those fast moving shots with better accuracy

There are lots of other differences as well

But believe me shooting at 1080p is one minor difference which i really did not care for making a choice when the main concern is pics:)

This is what I see on the warranty card. I am not sure this is a traveller's warranty since all it mentions is that I need the warranty card and the bill to claim the warranty in a country different from that of purchase.

To be honest, for a photography noob like me, most of what you said goes above my head :( All I understand is FZ100 gives better pictures and better control over what I shoot.
