system recovery problem

hello

I recently had some problems with my pc, with os windows xp. I couldn't log on to windows (mistake #1, running registry medic). At the screen that asks you to log into windows wouldnt give me any options to choose.. I didn't want to run system recovery and loose all my files that i didnt back up yet (mistake #2). So i tried booting windows xp from a disc (mistake #3). So after erasing all my files anyways (some times im scary how stupid i am) with the boot from cd, i now have a windows xp os installed on my pc that wasn't the original windows xp that came withmy pc. Now i want to run system recovery to get the original xp back because the current version wants me to activate but i already have it activated on my laptop. The problem is im no longer able to run system recovery. I still get the flashing message when i boot my computer that says press F10 to system recover, but i can press F10 untill the keyboard explodes and nothing happens, windows just starts anyways... the F1=setup option works, not sure if that means anything. Any suggestions???
thanks for any help
