Task manger cpu usage

I have a very slow PC and trying all sources to cure
Have scanned with Norton 2005 & Lavasoft no apparent problems .
Running XP Pro, 1Gb Ram, Task manager indicates 100% average CPU uage with 52 processes and no applications open
Explorer.exe using 98%
Is this the problem , If so what caused it and how do I correct the problem

try to kill the application explorer.exe from the task manager. see if the usage drops. then again run the app explorer.exe from the task manager's run dialog.
 
since my last post I have had an error message staing did I wish to disable the Norton Internet security 2005 Plug in
I chose yes to disable and now PC is back running at nomalCPU Usage.
What can I do to prevent this happening again when I update the virus definitions etc apart from Deleting NIS from my system
 
Disabling the nortan is not safe to your computer and in the same way if your computer is showing 99% CPU usage with out any process running in the task manager there might be some unknown programs running in the background..just try to clear everything from the start up from the MSCONFIG except the nortan and then check the differnence
