This week's winner in ExtremeTech's Science Fiction Case Mod Contest is Justin Hatem. Justin's rig resembles a weapon from the popular game Unreal Tournament—the PainMaster 5000 rocket launcher. Here's what Justin has to say about his creation:
When I set out to build a different and creative case mod, I wanted to make something from scratch. I see WAY too many mods that are either just some windows and lights or someone takes an existing product and shoves a PC inside of it. I decided to build this box, a replica Unreal Tounament Rocket Launcher.
I made this case completely from scratch, using wood and PVC. The inspiration came from the Unreal Tournament Rocket Launcher. This machine is a perfect mascot for UT LAN parties, as well as being the dedicated server.
It has a hinged access panel on the side to expose the ports, otherwise they are hidden. The top panel is removeable to access the components. I also built a stand to hold it steady. Though it's tough to photograph well, the blue cathode inside looks great in low light.
The total cost, not including tools was $213.38; adding the price of tools makes the total cost $500.29. The mod took 84 build hours and countless planning hours.
