The word mate

Mate is very common in UK / AUS, but yeah it does sound gay...



p.s. - its one of the carpenter's favourite words. lets see what happens in september :rofl
 
You are all wrong! Mate has no connection with either homosexuality or the Australians. While I can't speak of the former, it precedes the Australians by centuries :P

Mate comes from the Middle Low German word Gemate, which means one eating at the same table. Mate has also been used, at least, since the 1400s as a form of address by pirates and sailors, meaning officer on a merchant vessel.
