Graphic Cards Unable to use graphics card

Beginner
I recently reformatted my whole computer and installed a new copy of Windows XP Professional (then SP2).

Most of my hardware managed to install itself. I had to find and install drivers for the rest of the hardware, with the exception of my graphics card.

The problem is that in device manager it is not detecting my Nvidia GeForce Fx Go5100 graphics card, and is just using a "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)".

That thing is really bad for gaming, but my rig worked fine beforehand...

I've already downloaded and tried to install the relevant drivers for my actual graphics card, but I always get a message that says it "Could not locate any drivers that were compatible with my hardware. Setup will now exit".

I can't go on any 3d games until I've got my Nvidia card installed.

Could anybody please help me on doing something to get my graphics card up and running again!? Thanks in advance. If you need any more info on me I'll be replying asap.

I tried installing the 84.21, 91.31 and 91.33 Nvidia drivers. Apparently they all work for my driver.

The feedback I got from Nvidia about this problem just told me to disable the onboard graphics unit (I assumed this was the Video Controller (VGA ltCompatible)), and download and install the 84.21 driver. I tried this and got exactly the same result.

Is it a Laptop or a Desktop? :S..

Also, a stupid question..
Have you plugged in your Monitor to the Gfx Card.. :S... If its a desktop :|.

Its a Go5100, as you said, so i guess its a laptop :S.

You need to disable that from the BIOS, and not from the Device manager (Which you have seemingly done)

Just disable the Onboard gfx from the BIOS, and you are set to roll!

Um... How do I do that? :S

I'm a BIOS noob :cool2:

^ Which laptop model is it? Have you tried the drivers from your laptop manufacturer's webpage?

The driver versions you mentioned 84.21, 91.31, etc.. - i'm guessing you downloaded it from the official nVidia site. nVidia by default doesnt include the product ID's for Laptop GPU's in the INF file for their drivers, which is probably the reason they are not being detected.

Edit:

If you are not able to find the drivers from your laptop manufacturer/or the drivers are outdated, you could use the official nvidia drivers. All you need to do is include a modified INF file.

This should help you get started - [INFO] Bill's Driver Recommendation Thread - nVision
