Graphic Cards UNDERclock a GFX card ?

Eazy

Forerunner
I do not play games so speed is not THAT important to me - but I get HYPER with hardware heating up. A couple of days back I got a 6600GT card which idles at 55C .... reading shows in real time with NVTempLogger in systray - if you want download this from Guru3d.

I want to reduce this temp a bit (under 50C) - will underclocking the card reduce the temp ? Will uderclocking create probems ?

You must be wondering why-the-h*ll I bought this card if I did not need speed - the reason is simple I paid only about 1k more for upgrading from the nVidia 7300GS which I had before this :) ... the 7300GS had a few issues of its own and it ran idle at higher temps than the 6600GT :O

buy a better cooling solution, doesn't underclocking void warranty?

BUY = MONEY = DONT HAVE ANY MORE TO SPEND :D

How bad is 55C for idling for a 6600GT GFX card - is this high ?

my idles maybe even >60C

So I am not too badly off.... BUT .. I have AMD 64 3000+ CPU idle temp of 35C and case temp of 32C. So the GFX temp looked high to me in comparison.

I have a BFG 6600GT, idles around 47-50C. But it has a 120 mm fan blowing directly to it from a distance of about 4-5 inches(the case is Sonata where the placement of the front 1200 mm fan is in the inside part of the HDD cage:S ).

And you do not take Asusprobe temps very seriously! Do you? As you yourself have pointed out a number of times, there are certain "allegations" about temp monitoring in Asus boards :bleh:

I would like to know abt this too...I was just thinking of the same coz lot of the times u dont need that high clocks

Anyone has an idea

HEY BUD !! Long time no see .....

I have the same card and same 120mm fan setup as you do. :)

Nope I do not use ASUS Probe for my temp readings - I use Mother Board Monitor - BUT - I do not take the default readings - what I did was take an accurate mercury thermometer and placed it next to the I/O chip (which I understand is resposible for displaying the case temp) on the MoBo and I observed a difference of 3C between the Thermometer and MoBoMon - for a change ASUS's Temp readouts are on the higher side :D - so I tweaked MoBoMon's data files to reflect this difference and now I get what I think is the RIGHT CPU and Case temps :)

For the GFX card's Temp reading I use NVTempLogger - this is a nice little proggy which I downloaded from Guru3d. Do you use this same prog for the GFX temps ?

One question .... do you have the BFG 6600GT GFX card with the round copper heatsink ? (I read in a review that the round copper heat sink is made by ...... ZALMAN !!!) Is it with Dual BIOS and a buzzer ? If YES to all then can you please make me a copy of the driver CD ? I got my card with no cables or CDs or Manuals.

Hi Eazy,
I'll go home and post a pic of the card. I got it from USA (ZZF) last year.

Anyway, this is the link to the card
>>BFG Technologies<<

I have the driver CD, please let me know if you want it. I'll courier it to you tomorrow

But I think the latest forceware drivers will be better. Isn't it?

NAH man ... slightly different card ... here is a link to my card..

galaxy news

Its not the driver I want but this card needs a special software to get back a working BIOS when the card runs into problems with overclocking - this software is on the CD.

THANKS for the offer of couriering the CD :)

actiually there have been cases of too low clock speeds damaging the card.

I still have a 6600GT agp running in my sister's pc and i have underclocked it to 250/800 as she dont play games.

anything lower than this and i would run into weird stability issues.

dont go too low on clocks.

but... BUT... what was the difference in Temperatures ??? I am thinking about underclocking only to reduce the Temp.

<50C is normal for ur card. It wont have any problem even if it exceeds 60C, They are made to run at those temp. Most of the nV cards have a Threshold of 135C. So ur well under.

btw my CPU ideals around 52C n 59C on Full loads.

the temps do went down a bit. that was my primary objective too as cabinet used is mATX.

this card is idling at around 40 now which is not bad at all for 6600 AGP.

nothing to worry about ... the core is supposed to take a big beating .... and still survive ... u should worry about the load temps more .. don't let it go over 85c if u intend to use this card for a long time ...

THANKS .... all this info was what I was looking for !!

yup eazy...also frm thetime i have 6600gt(ard 10months)...i havent seen its temp below 57..........its default is mentioned 145........but ppl told me to worry only if temp crosses 90 degrees...so need not worry sir.....

THANKS for the info !! my card seems to idle at 55C. This worried me as it was the first GFX card Ive had showed its GPU temp... and everything on my system reports temps around 30 - 35C so this was way above what I have got used to seeing.
