I am thinking of upgrading over my 9800gt with the 6950. I have read on numerous places that this card is actually an underclocked 6970 (AMD does this stuff a lot, eh?) and can be unlocked to function as a 6970. My question is, is this possible for all 6950 models or does this work only for some specific models? Secondly, what about the temperatures, after unlocking are they manageable without having to resort to thermal paste or fans?

Thirdly, is this card compatible with my motherboard? If no, could you guys suggest one (with DDR3 ram support if possible)?

Four, is it worth getting the 2 gb version for gaming at a resolution of 1920x1200? These benchs indicate there isn't any difference but I am a bit skeptical, how reliable is Anandtech anyway?

Five, which version should I get (between XFX, Sapphire, Asus, MSI etc), given that I plan to unlock it? The prices vary from 13k to 16k

Six, can a Corsair 450VX handle the stock/oc'ed 6950/70?

Finally, is the 6950 the best choice in its price range and for gaming at 1920x200? (I know this should have been the first question. :P)

Re: Unlockability of the 6950, compatability with my mobo and a bunch of other querie

1. Only the models based on the reference 6950 are unlockable. But finding such a card now is pure luck since AMD has fixed it

2. It didnt have any abnormal increase in temp as indicate in many blogs

3. Compatible since it supports PCI-e x16

4. At 1920x1200 you wont notice a difference in majority of the games. I think you cannot unlock the 1GB version to 6970 anyways. Anandtech is very very reliable.

5. I think one particular model is XFX is based on reference design. Not sure about Sapphire. Again, getting an unlockable card is not assured.

6. OCing the 6950, it will be best option to go with a vx550 atleast

7. 6950 is an excellent card for the resolution, Yes.
