[Update: Ban Lifted] VLC Media Player banned in India

So this is interesting, an open source app banned...

Never realised this as the site was never blocked by my ISP and is still accessible.

I am 100% sure, this is one of those cases where some movie producer got a list of sites with pirated content on a court order, and telecom operators blocked it, without thinking twice. This has happened with other websites before too. This is so stupid though.

Wasn't this because somekind of Chinese spyware was using VLC installations on PC for its job? This has nothing to do with VLC itself but the spyware dll uses VLC on a compromised PC to do it's spying. So the government's solution is to prevent people from using VLC altogether. Kinda stupid solution but then again how else can they fix this mess? Run a antivirus scan on every PC in the country?

Videolan.org is still accessible on jio fiber

Considering how Google deals with DMCA requests and takes down original content based on fake complaints, this isn't that bad. Also, it doesn't impact most ISPs and is still downloadable from freeware sites, so impact is minimal.

Yes

It's not about alternatives, it's about the principle of banning anything that you don't like without taking even a moment to think it over.
India be turning into Xindia. Why aren't gambling apps banned, if they want the nation's disruptions to be gone? *puts on tin foil hat* I feel like this is terrible but clever way of recreating ROTS (You were supposed to destroy the sith not join them!)
