Nokia 500 doesn't have a 3D GPU accelerator.

I've read that even Angry Birds doesn't run on the 500. WTF is this entirely true? My friend just bought this phone and he's gonna kill me!

^^ i already know about that version. But how do I explain that games like Angry Birds (proper, obviously he's played the game on some other phone and wanted to play in on his own, not a Java version for Pete's sake), and maybe almost every .sis HD games made for Symbian^3 won't work on the damn Nokia 500 he just spent 10,000 bucks on buying from a Nokia Priority Dealer.

What a shame.

You should have done some research before advising your friend.¶

It can't run 3d games . Also can't play hd clips. Open gl 1.1. Same as low end android devices. I had cautioned regarding this in an earlier thread. . . But then expected for the price. How come your friend spent 10k. Is it not supposed to be more like 8.5k ?

I still love the good old s60v3 & v5 OS. They were rock solid and would run any app or game thrown at them even if the phone says its not compatible. The newer anna sucks big time and now this n500. And how did nokia came to the conclusion of dumping symbian just coz of MS ??

:@Symbian gave nokia its own identity and is still its solid platform and mind you its not slow but the poor nokia hardware is slow. Symbian never failed but nokia phone i.e its poor hardware was to be blamed for slowing and lagging the OS.

I still stand and will always stand with symbian :)

^ it's not about the hardware. It's more because perception of the consumers has changed. Symbian still remains one hell of optimized os but consumers were spoilt silly with iOS and android. More then interface it was about varied apps and games. Nokia never had a good app distribution network even though it was one of the pioneer to start it called "downloads". Also while symb had good devs , initially they were never supported well by the company. Nokia woke up really late to the current needs of the public perhaps satisfied in their belief that iphones are a temporary distraction. Unfortunately that step backfired. Also some strange decisions like supporting a resistive screen too long, getting stuck to the nhd resolution hurt a lot. Nokia 500 is essentially a c5 03 with over clocked processor and a cpctv display. It was never meant to perform at the same level as nokia flagships. Btw one easy way to check graphical capablities of a phone is to check it's video recording specs.

Of course. It lacks GPU unlike the Nokia 700, 701. What did you expect in a budget phone! They never said it will run 3D games. Its supposed to be a replacement for the Nokia C5-03 and it has done that job well.

flipkart has the 500 for 10.2k

and c5-03 for 9.1k

so i guess, a good deal

i'll go for this phone even without its 3d capabilities if it were available at 7-8k

This is the first time that a Symbian^3 device won't be able to run all the apps or games available to the catalogue.

Remember, every S60v5 device can run the same apps and games, whether its a 7k 5230 or 25k N97.

And that was the case with Symbian OS version specific devices. Until now. I hadn't anticipated it. Now I realise why gsmarena was complaining that the UI and browser didn't feel like it was running on a 1GHz processor. The GPU, which accelerates a major part of Sym^3 UI and stuff, is missing.(2D is there, but what the helL!)

Letsbuy, use AMEXLB coupon for 8.5k price tag.

No 3D GPU accelerator=No HD games, Why didnt your research before advising him, hope he doesnt install any hd games :P

True. Most of the S60V5 handsets were using the same SOC. But the 5233/5230 came year or so after the 5800 so that it can afford to offer the same SOC @ cheaper price.

But guess they might not have been able to do so due to closeness in launch this time(This is the first sub 10k S^3 phone) or just wanted to differentiate this handset from premium belle offerings. IINM even the initial news items on gsmarena had mentioned during the time of device announcement had mentioned that it had only 2D accelerator. Sad that it wasn't highlighted much elsewhere and your friend ended up with this device. The HTC explorer could have been a much better phone for the money.
