Laptops Want to buy a basic laptop for coding purposes

Hey there mates.

It so happened that my friends pc died out and he wants to get a laptop.

His usage is limited to coding and general surfing on the web.

He does not play games or even watch movies on his pc and wont be doing so on his lappy too.

So his usage is limited to the most basic of web surfing and coding and using ms office like excel, word, powerpoint, etc.

I could not come up with a laptop suggestion based on this minimalistic usage and thought would give your grey cells some workout.

He is ok if the laptop weighs a ton as he is still a student and won't be lugging it to school or college anytime in future.

So please suggest some basic value for money laptops possibly within a 30K range and from where to get them for a nice deal.

I am a noob when it comes to basic lappys. ( otherwise too :D )
 
look for a non widescreen monitor. They're beginning to get elusive these days . we all know taller screen = more code :D
 
I stay at thane and i would be helping him buy it either from navi mumbai or lamington or may be some store in thane itself if there is no onsite warranty.

He is really a kid and is currently in 11th and would be pursuing engg later ( very common these days LOL ) and might be using this lappy for some years to come ( at least till his 1st year or so as warned by his dad :) )

Well guys. You need to give me something more specific. I told him to get one from dell inspiron as those are cheap but heavy and will do in his case. But i am looking for specific models here.

Please hit me with some models and links. Also his price is a bit constrained at 30k so i would be taking him around for a tour de mumbai of sorts for pricing information.

I think i will list out the usage :P that would be better.

Usage includes and LIMITED to

web browsing ( for googling stuff he can use in his homework )
powerpoint ( for occassional presentations in college )
coding ( light coding c, C++ .. currently he is learning java so thats pretty much it )

baki sab ke liye ghar pe tv hai :D

price limit .. 30k

No brand preference. HP, Compaq, Dell, etc. etc. etc. :D

Also his pc usage is as limited as i mentioned earlier. So they wanna become HIP and get a laptop. As in HAMARE PAAS BHE LAPTOP HAI.

I proposed soo many pc combos using amd + asus 690 or 780 mobo with all goodies and LCD option for 35 but they wanna get a laptop.

So after having over worked my brains there i put up a thread here and am awaiting your replies.

i think having a laptop can not be a replacement of having a desktop, u cant leave the lappy on all night to download torrents for one, and by the time 11 grader will reach college he may like a 'in fashion' lappy.

lekin buzurgon ki koi thori sunta hai...

hey guys i would be going for a sight seeing trip tomorrow :P to lammy or maybe croma at mulund.

Could anyone suggest good shops in mulund thane area or at lammy to buy a sub 30K lappy..

Dont need any high performance stuff.. just a plain lappy to surf the net and use ms office applications like excel, word, powerpoint etc.

I did take a liking to the dell vostro but dunno how to order it for less or from where to get coupon codes for a discount.

Any one would recommend any acer lappys or compaq or hp ones?

I am pretty much crippled when it comes to laptops :D
 
I am using the EEE and it is damn good for basic coding and surfing. You ll get it for 15k.
If not, try the Acer 4710z or the 4520
 
I would say desktop is better. If he gets a cheapo notebook for now, im sure he will be ashamed to take that to college (i.e in next 2years when he joins engineering) the second day. Tell that to him :)

For now, the HIP this EEE pc. I would say go with that and maybe setup separate KVM at home.

I think its the other way, well, if you are coding using vi then more hight == more code works. but if you are using tools like eclipse or visual studio, wider screens are better. coz the solution explorer and other windows eat up lot of space on the sides leaving with very little space for coding.
 
look if he really requires a Mobile Computing solution. there is no use of lappy is you are sitting at home at the time :P

These days most people get a laptop as its "In thing" to have.

For coding C/C++, what compiler does he use?

I don't think Turbo C runs in vista, nearly all Notebook comes with OEM copy of Vista :P

most college are still stuck it this historic artistic cr@p:lol:

I would suggest getting a Dell series laptop, next HP.
 
OK guys.. thanks for all the replies.. I finally bought the compaq c772tu for 30k without the bag or the os. :D also i will be getting a cd of all the drivers needed for it by evening.. :D

Pretty nice deal i must say ... other places i enquired everyone was quoting above 32K :D
