AFAIK,the word 'bandwidth' comes from the field of electronics.

In Electronics, bandwidth represents the slice of electromagnetic spectrum bitween two frequencies.

i.e. BW=f2-f1 where f2,f1 are two frequencies.

In n/w ing,BW denotes the throughput of a communications channel.

In electronics, bandwidth is represented in Hz,KHz,MHz,GHz.
In networking, bandwidth is represented in bits/sec,kb/s,mb/s etc.

From Wikipedia

Bandwidth is a measure of frequency range, measured in hertz, of a function of a frequency variable. Bandwidth is a central concept in many fields, including information theory, radio communications, signal processing, and spectroscopy. Bandwidth also refers to data rates when communicating over certain media or devices.
