PC Peripherals WDTV + HDMI picture blinking

I bought this HDMI cable to connect my WD TV to my Samsung LCD 32". The TV supports upto 720p. The player supports upto 1080p.

Now the problem is a bit strange. The display blinks, as in it's there for 1 - 2 seconds, goes off for about half a second, and then is back for another 1 - 2 seconds. Not sure what is happening. However, one thing I noticed is, when I fast forward the content, the display is continuous - I don't see those blinks anymore. What could possibly be wrong?

Since you say that the TV supports ONLY 720p, did you applied any settings in the player to run in 720p mode ?. Actually the player will automatically detect the TV resolution . Even i have the same player connected to a sony 32" and it displays 720p in the top corner during the WD logo and immediately changes to 1080p.. Did you try the player in a different 32" LCD TV ?. This is to ensure the issue is not with the player....
