Hi,

My desktop system (specs in signature below) has recently started acting weird.

When powering on it sometimes reboots halfway into Windows booting and sometimes even after booting "freezes" for a few minutes and then restarts.

Initially a few weeks back it used to indicate normal booting but the monitor showed no signal input. And on powering off and on again I used to the see the Windows "safe mode" options indicating it had booted previously.

I had initially assumed this was a GPU problem, but am now thinking it might be either a SMPS or Mobo problem.

Would really appreciate any insights folks here could provide into this that might help me definitively isolate the faulty component?

TIA

1. Reset the CMOS once.

2. Remove all OC.

3. Update to CCC 10.5

4. Install fresh OS.

If still persists..

1. Try different RAM (or run MEMTEST)

2. Try different GPU

3. Try different SMPS

This way you isolate the parts. Should show you what is wrong.

Everything is running at stock

Hmm... dont have another GPU/SMPS.

I did run memtest a few weeks back and found no issues, will probably try it again now. If not guess I would need to buy another GPU (might as well have a spare anyway :)) and check with that.

I did check the voltages in BIOS and the only thing I noticed was that the 3.3V always shows 3.248V while the others (5 and 12V) are more or less at 5.04 and 12.09-12.15. Not sure if that is an issue though?

Hmmm.. I just took out my GPU from the cabinet (powered it off when the comp had restarted) and noticed that the GPU seems to be burnt or at least thats what it looks like to me (see attached pic).

Think it is the GPU that may have overheated?

Either ur picture doesn't show it or I need to get my eyes tested..... Where are the burns??

Else, open the pic in Paint & circle the burns that u think are burns & reupload the pic.

BTW, if u remove the GPU, does ur pc function normally??

Hmm... didn't circle them as I was hoping that if they were real burns others would see them without the need to point them out.

So guess those are not a real problem then? (fyi they are the dark regions beneath the plastic visible on the fins - lower right corner of card in the pic)

Hey does anyone know if shops in Ritchie Street, Chennai are open on Sundays?

Shops are closed on Sundays..atleast Delta, Rahul etc.. are closed:)

they are functional from 11am to 7pm. Mon - Sat.. that was the status some 7-8months ago..someone please correct me if i am wrong..

Just got back from there and yes most of the shops are closed :(.

From the shops that were open got to know that the HD 6850 XFX costs 12.3K

Reboots like this can be due any number of issues. Try a bare minimum config and proceed from there. Only mobo, ram, cpu, odd (live cd). From then on start adding components.

My guess says Mobo.

Well, I don't really see any burn marks on the GPU even after u pointed out the possible trouble areas. It is probably just dust accumulated under the fins that seems different due to the orange colored HS.

Leave aside the GPU & try using the Mobo + RAM + CPU + HDD using only the onboard graphics.

It is either the Mobo or the RAM that is acting up. If u get trouble even with a barebones structure (as above), try with only 1 RAM stick.

I just took apart my HD 4850 and cleaned it (as much as I could). There was a lot of dust on the heat sink near the fan and after cleaning got a 10 degrees (Centigrade) reduction in temperature of the GPU. :)

Then put the thing back and have been using it since this morning, haven't faced any problems so far except one when a few hours back when I restarted the comp and did not get any display (confirming it is a GPU problem at least) as the system did boot (heard the windows startup sound). After restarting once more now haven't faced any problems, have been playing Crysis for some time on it until now.

So looks like I may need to upgrade the GPU sometime soon (no rush now though). Planning to get a HD 6850 sometime soon ...
