Storage Solutions Western Digital Green 1TB faulty. Suggestions for a new 1TB drive

hello,

I have a 1TB WD Green drive WD10EADS-00L5B1 that went kaput today. Bought last year around June. I have requested for RMA and generated the RMA no. on their website. Now, I have been reading up on the sticky thread and really worried about the drive and honestly speaking, I have no hopes of getting it back.

So, can you guys tell me which hard disk to go for now. I have to have a 1TB HDD. How is Seagate doing in A.S.S. these days? Or, any other brand for that matter except WD. Please suggest me what drive to buy. I am open to all brands except WD.

Should be 1TB. Suggestions for 500GB also welcome, just in case I change my mind. thank you all.

Thanks for the link, Gannu, but I already went thru it. And I am going thru a lot of links right now. For me, it becomes a matter of peace of mind when I get replies on my own thread focussing on the issues/restrictions of mine. Not the best in class approach, but........

So, links are always welcome, and also I would really appreciate if you could voice your opinions too.

Like I said, I haven't faced issues but it appears some specific batches of the WD20EADS were facing issues before - not sure if this has been resolved. And these days, the RMA process of WD has become a pain in the rear for some of us. I have been at the receiving end myself when the 5000BEVT drive inside my netbook conked out and had to send it for replacement. The sad part is they did not update the progress whilst the drive was sent and I was under the impression that the consignment got lost in transit. Only to receive the drive after almost 40 days. Seagate OTOH is quicker in the processing part although they do not have a pickup and drop facility.

HTH.

i'm also onto buying 1tb drive.

can anybody please clarify the ASS and availability of Samsung drives(sorry for hijacking the thread)

^

Samsung drives are a rarity and I am not aware of their ASS support, best would be sticking to Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drives, I've had only bad experiences with Western Digital Green Edition drives so wouldn't recommend them especially 1 TB editions, two of my college mates ended up losing most of their data after their drives flamed out at wrong times < both were Western Digital Green Editions 1 TB bought in Bangalore around Q3 2010 >

I find it dangerous to collate so much data on a single HDD < 1 TB > or more so recommend you go for a config like 2x 500GB for peace of mind or if you have the budget SSD for OS and other crucial softwares while standard drives for storage value :), hope this helps.

^ It's all a matter of luck i believe... i've had/have 2*320GB, 1*640GB, 2*1TB and 1*2TB WD harddrives... none of them have ever failed me :) :fingers crossed:

Okay, thanks for the replies guys. In Vashi plaza, I could only find find Seagate .12 and Hitachi. I am leaning more towards Hitachi. How is the after sales? They have onsite warranty. Is it as pathetic as WD?

okay, so I bought 1TB Hitachi. Model no. is HDS721010CLA332. According to internet it is 7k1000.C. HD Tune pro does not say anything about this. Do you guys know how I can tell if its in fact 7k1000.C. Just for knowledge.... And, thank you all for the replies.....

And, it turns out that my WD HDD is super fine. The SATA cable had gone bad. But, a good lesson learned, since I had some important data on it that could have gone with the wind. So, I went ahead and bought this HDD. I am gonna dedicate 500GB to only backups.....
