What do you think of Shopee's shutdown in India?

In case you are not aware, Shopee, a singaporean based online shop closed its operations in India due to "market uncertainties" only after around 6 months of launch. Things were available at literally the cheapest price there, many products at half the price of Amazon with free shipping. I even bought something which costed Rs.10 on COD and free shipping too!! The closest thing to Aliexpress we could see in my opinion.

Some believed that it has something to do with the ban of a popular game called Free fire earlier. Seriously, if GOI keeps banning apps that they don't like on "privacy" grounds, foreign companies will stop investing in India. I feel like a huge part of it has to do with some Indian traders trying to gain a monopoly by going against foreign companies and then proceed to import from China anyway. These bans have to stop.

Is there any similar alternative site?

Shoppee was filled with p!55 poor quality and fake products. Of the 10-11 products I ordered. Not even one of them matched the description.

Am sure they have duped thousands in the guise of undercutting (by price) competitors. No way they can sustain long term with such strategy. Good riddance IMO.

I agree with you on that, it's definitely not a site for good quality and original items. But out of 35 items I ordered, only 3 of them were not upto mark which were easily returned and refunded.

Small products and accessories like these that doesn't have to be "original" are the reason why I mostly like Shopee. For things expensive I still prefer sites like Amazon for obvious reasons.

Surprised they would be duping when they are trying to build customer base. Definitely selling cheaper poor quality Chinese stuff. They exited France last month too

Ultracheap ecommerce is further away from the mainstream in France than it is in less developed countries. Expectations of wealthier consumers are also higher, so it might be more difficult to build trust over time, if Shopee starts off as a brand known for selling poor quality, cheap Chinese goods.

Losing in India isn't going to look good for them
