What do you think of this rig ?

Hi Guys,
I'm planning to go for this rig. Let me know your thoughts, if there's a better/cheaper option available. This is partly based on the nov 2009 guide :) I'll be using the rig for watching HD movies, photo/video editing and gaming.

Processor: Intel Core i-5 750 - 10.5k
intel DP55WB - 6.7k
RAM: 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600MHz - 5k
Sapphire 5770 1GB GDDR5(DX11) - 11.3k
HDD: Seagate 1TB SATAII 7200.12 series - 4k
Cabinet: CoolerMaster 590 - 3.8k
SMPS: Corsair TX 650W - 7k

Very good choice of components. Try to get the Gigabyte P-55 UD2 if you can. Other than that its fine with a good PSU with nice headroom for upgrades :) Even a VX550w can handle your rig with ease though

^^ thanks karthi007. My only worry is that it costs upwards of 40k. I wanted to know if there are any cheaper alternatives for the above components. Something which can give a comparable performance if not better, to bring the cost down below 30k ?

I'm looking to see if someone here can help me optimize the same. I'm not much into the pc scene, so not quite updated on the components or the prices. So please help guys :)

Processor: Intel Core i-5 750 - 10.5k

M/B:Gigabyte P55 UD2 -7k

RAM: 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333MHz - 4.5k

Sapphire 5770 1GB GDDR5(DX11) - 11.3k

HDD: Seagate 500GB SATAII 7200.12 series - 2.5k

Cabinet: CoolerMaster Elite 330 - 2k

SMPS: Corsair VX 450W - 4k

Total-41.8k

you can't do something to get the cost below 30k.

^^ i mean, is there any of the components i can replace with cheaper alternatives to get a comparable performance, even if its 5-10% I'm ok with that !

^ you don't need TX650 to power up that rig...

VX450 is enough for that..

if you want core i5 then there is nothing you can do to reduce it's cost..

if you are running low on money then always save money on those components which are very easy to upgrade..

like HDD,Ram etc..

get a Sapphire 5750 rather than 5770 you'll save around 2k..

^^ thanks for the inputs naveen. I'm not totally fixed on any particular brand. If there's an alternative to i5, i'm fully ok with that. I just chose i5, as its the latest one and I don't have much idea regarding the AMD lineup, but I'm completely open to either of the platform.

So feel free to suggest an alternative to any of the components, including the proc :eek:hyeah:

^naveen58 , correct your typo . Seagate 500GB SATAII 7200.12 series - 2.3k

^naveen58 , 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333MHz - 4.5k. Where ? Where ? Why do you always quote RAM prices wrong !! :

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 - 8.5k

Mobo: Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2H - 5.9k

RAM: Transcend 4GB (2x2GB DDR3) 1333MHz - 5.2k

GPU: ATI 4870 512mb - 8.5k

HDD: Seagate 500GB SATAII 7200.12 series- 2.4k

Cabinet: CM Elite 310 - 1.5k

SMPS: Corsair VX 450W - 4k

Total - 35.9k

This rig will offer you same or nearly equal performance to the Core i5 rig you chose , only thing its cheaper

@OP but better go for core i5..

BTW what will be your main purpose for this rig..

if it's pure gaming then core i3 is good too..

^naveen58 , Read the OP's post carefully before posting

^ i already read that but read my above post carefully where i'm asking for the "MAIN PURPOSE" of the rig...

i.e. whether he'll be gaming more or photoshopping more or Watching Movies atleast once a day..

I hope you got that clear Now..

I got that clear.

No offence intended , Please do correct the typos you make

thanks, that looks like a decent rig. Is vx450 enough ? If i add any new components in the future like a sound card etc, will it hold ?

^Go for the HD5770 1GB GDDR5 ~ 10.25k then. It is more power efficient and performance is 90% that of the HD4870 512MB. Will give you better headroom to upgrade with the VX450. The PhenomII X4 955+ HD 4870 is already pushing the VX450 and will leave very little room for future additions.

Better get a PhenomII X4 925 ~ 7.7k (95w TDP as against the 125w TDP of X4 955)

Use extreme PSU Calculator eXtreme Power Supply Calculator v2.5

Select the components you are planning to buy and make sure you select 100% TDP for CPU and 100% load under system load and select 20% capacitor aging to get the max (worst case power consumption of your potential rig). Add 10% extra wattage if you want head room for future upgrades. Also sound card consume very little power, max will the power supplied by the slot (PCI, PCI-E etc... which is low1).

PSUs run at their best efficiency aroung 75 - 90% load (at. Which also translates to lower temps, and hence lower noise.

My rig runs at 330-350 watts max (approx value got from APC powerchute) under full load (Full load calculated by running prime95 4 threads small FFT and Furmark burn test simultaniously). Check signature for my config.

ok guys, thanks to the help of the forum members here, I've more or less settled on one of the two configs, leaning more towards i5.

AMD system:
Phenom II X4 955 @ 8.5k
MSI 785G E51 @ 5.6k

or

Intel system:
Processor: Intel Core i-5 750
motherboard: intel dh55tc

now, for gfx card - i'm still confused between two choices: ATI 5770 1GB or GTX 260 216 sonic edition. While the ATI card has dx11 and is cheaper than GTX 260, i've read that performance wise, in games, GTX 260 outshines 5770 and moreover, 5770 comes with lot of buggy drivers.

Wanted the opinions of the experts here.

Also, how important is the cabinet ? For ex: I'm finding a cabinet from a company called VIP for Rs 1000. Is it ok or is there is any advantage of sticking to a branded cabinet like CM which is Rs 2k more !
