Storage Solutions What does a Sata 3 NVME x2 slot mean

Hi Guys,

Want to add an extra drive in my laptop, and the second empty slot says this [pic attached]

Sata 3
NVME x2

Have ordered this NVME drive. Will it work, and will the slot limit the speeds, and if so, what speeds would the slot be cap[able of? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Crucial P3 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen3 NVMe Internal SSD, up to 3500MB/s - CT1000P3SSD8

Means it supports Sata or Nvme ssd in M.2 form factor.
Nvme x2 tells that its supports 2 pcie lanes and for nvme to operate at full speed it requires 4 pcie lanes. So in this slot your P3 ssd would work at half of it's speed. That won't drastically affect its performance but the sequential r/w would reduce from 3.2/3.5GBps to around 1.75-1.9 GBps approx.

Thanks so much. Most lucid reply I have got, and I've posted this at so many places.

But from what I have read, the P3 SSD anyway is not capable of using 4PCIe lanes?

P3 is capable of using x4 PCIe 3.0 lanes as it advertises sequential reads up to 3500MB/s (PCIe 3.0 x1 lane = 1 GB/s). But, for most users the random Q1 read and write speed matters (OS boot time, app launch time) and SSDs haven't even saturated x1 PCIe 3.0 lane. So, you are fine to go with P3 and using it in x2 mode.

Thanks. So, buying a more expensive 'faster' NVMe and using it in this slot is also pointless I presume?

So, added the Crucial P3 and it gives read/write as per the specs. This is the pic of the MB
It says NVME x2 or SATA3 and the performance

Maybe I am missing something but doesn't the screenshot seem to indicate 4 pci-e lanes for the nvme slot?

Heck you are right. That's not a screenshot but a pic of my motherboard when I had the laptop open.

What I had seen on Youtube had said that the LG Grams had NVMEx2, but they must have upgraded it. See the image in the original post. Thats a Youtube screenshot which shows NVMEx2.

Thanks. You solved the puzzle as to why I was getting good speeds.

Haha, happens to all of us .. Glad you got it sorted!
