What happens when I port from one service provider, and do not activate with the new provider?

My brother had applied for MNP from Aircel to Airtel about a week ago. He was told that the porting would happen after 7 working days. Unfortunately, my brother had to go to US in a very short notice, and he's already landed there. The new Airtel SIM as well as the old Aircel is with him right now. Is it possible to activate the Airtel SIM from there? He still hasn't received the time of porting message, and not sure if he'll be able to. He isn't expected to return until March.

Also, like the title says, what happens if he doesn't activate the service with Airtel? Is there any possibility to retain the number?

I had ported my reliance gsm prepaid number to airtel prepaid and before whole procedure got complete i went abroad. I had received msg that formalities from reliance end were complete and i should expect sms from airtel at the starting of their service but i went abroad in the mean time. So I couldnt do verification callback for airtel CC to start their service.

But still when i came back in october 2016 after 6 months, i just tried that same verification call and my number started again on airtel unexpectedly. I was also concerned whether my number will go out of service due to lack of use/ lack of verification etc. But it didnt happen. I was trying to call the same number (my ported airtel number) to confirm its given to different person or still reserved for me and i was getting all the time same recorded msg that services to this number are temporarily suspended or similar to that. I had a bit of hope of retaining number.

I suggest you to ask your brother to get in touch with airtel CC and may be appellate authority later to check whether verification can be done online through mail etc. So that his airtel number starts working. I didnt have that option.

Had tried this. Airtel CC responded that they will look into the matter, but nothing further happened. They did rule out verification online or via mail. I left it at that without pursuing any further.

I've been doing the same, and have been getting "temporarily out of service" message only till date. Let's see how it pans out. Either my brother or one of his friends might be visiting India by March/April, and we'll try to activate it then.

Alternatively you can use the same porting code and provide your documents and get a new SIM. Not exactly sure of the process but you can check with your new operator.
My friend used a SIM which was in my name but when he ported he just gave his documents and got the new SIM in his own name.

I had some problem of that sort but it was something Airtel started charging me before the activation also. So whenever I made calls in the last week of deactivation of my Aircel prepaid was charged from Aircel and Airtel both. Called Airtel customer care after I got the bill and they waived off those charges.
