Guys,

What have u set your page file size on Windows 7 (or Vista)
I got 4GB RAM - Dual channel

I really don't know the optimum size :ashamed:

Since u have 4 Gig of ram like me, ram usage is never >27%(atleast for me ). U can avoid pagefile .. it hugely effects system performance .. plus u can c immediate effect in games like COD:MW2 .. ( i can run games on higer settig now , trust me). Not only games .. application once opened up response really fast and also they open up real reallly quick.

The only down side is , when ur memory is 75-80% used games like crysis and crysis warhead will tell u that u r low on memory and will exit after about 20-30 mins of gameplay . THIS IS SHIT consdering the remaning 20% is about 800mb ram.

There is no way around this so u have to keep page file if u wanna play those games. But this just happene to me while playing crysis, never again.

SO conclusion - try not to keep the page file.

If u wanna keep the page file then set it to 1024-1024. Not maintened by widows. THis way it wont cause fragmentation problems !!!

If you have ~8GB RAM, u need not use paging et all, but if you have 4GB u need to have a paging file since a lot of instances the memory goes down to 10-20% free in a 64 bit OS. That is when ur OS will need the extra mem to run applications without a hitch.

If you google, you might be able to find an article about the usage of page file for 4GB and 8GB systems with benchmarks and stuff. :)

Thanks guys, i get some many different answers
Should I disable the pagefile as well, with 4GB RAM or set it to a low value!

Set it to Automatic ie Windows controlled

I am not sure guys, there is no concrete information on whats the best value, there are so many opinions

I have set 512MB on a Non-OS drive

Check out the below thread:

Any benefit or detriment from removing a pagefile on an 8GB RAM machine? - Server Fault

According to this, u should have a pagefile just to ensure that ur system doesn't crash when memory leak happens in some applications like utorrent etc. Also, when playing games like Crysis which eat up memory like chips, the data on RAM can be backed up to pagefile to give the game more memory.

Moreover, in cases of 64bit OS, where memory leak is more often than in x86 OS, a 8GB RAM is eaten up when transferring files over 8GB size.

What i think is it all depends upon how the applications are designed - to use the pagefile or not. If they are designed not to, no issues, but if yes like Windows 7, then the OS might crash. :cool2:

Also, how much does it hurt to keep a backup in HDD anyway. Keep 4GB as pagefile and relax aaram se. :)

My take. Do not disable pagefile. Pagefile keeps lots of unrequired items like printer drivers which a user may not require immediately. Loading everything in memory will hurt when you really need more ram , say loading a big photoshop image or just a heavy graphics image.
