Laptops Which company makes the worst laptops?

There have been questions about reliability of laptops from a particular company. Lots of people vouch for and against a particular brand based on their experiences. So here is one article on CNET I wanted to share which concludes that all brands are equally reliable.

Most people rely on anecdotal evidence to pick a laptop they think won't break down--relying on horror stories from friends or the Internet. Of course, every manufacturer has a mile-long list of angry customers who have not gotten satisfaction from indifferent tech support telephone drones, fine-print-filled warranties, or shady third-party repair services

No major laptop brand is really much more likely to break down than any other. Why? Because most laptops are essentially commodity products, made from the exact same components, and differentiated only by their outer shells and extra features. So, next time someone says not to buy a laptop from a certain vendor because they "break down all the time," you can assure them that there's about a 1-in-5 chance their laptop will develop a major problem, no matter where it came from.

don't agree..

what separates say a HP machine from a gateway, even though they may be assembled by the same OEM supplier is that the HP machines will go through a far stringent QA check before being dispatched to the market....

Needless to say the risk of failure for the proccy/HDD/RAM individually will remain the same but the same cannot be said for the quality of the screen/build/mobo or for the overall package for that matter

Plus besides Reliability, there are other factors people take in consideration while buying laptops. Customer Support, VFM (particular config at various costs from different vendors) and Styling are common factors... for that matter, in my personation obeservation most of these (average user) people look at overall reliability after the above mentioned factors.

While it's true that most of the internals are made by same OEM supplier, outer shell, it's build quality, overall feature sets are different per vendor at one given price point. For example... as a user of both HP and Dell laptops, I feel Dell has better build quality (not sure about latest HP range, but DV series felt cheaper in feel compared to XPS). Another example, recently I helped a friend purchasing a laptop... after bit of a study, we could find a better deal with Dell. At 48k he got penryn and 3 gb ram while he HP had similarly config'd system at 52k without penryn. So, all that also makes difference.

Anyway, that's a personal opinion about vendors.

:) agreed...though the inner stuff may be the same the outer shell certainly is not...Acer from personal experience has a very bad build quality.

Asus and Acer didn't even figure in the list ??

Frankly, I was looking for such kind of numbers for Asus as they make really affordable gaming notebooks...
