CPU/Mobo Which CPu+Mobo combo to buy?

dude if u are ready to spend 11K - i would say go for a i3 540+P7H55 .......i personally got it and also got a pretty good overclock of 4.1GHZ .............if u want a ddr2 E7500+Asus p43tm good for overclocking also stock run ........

If you can extend your budget by 1k then get these:-

Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 ~ 4.9k

AMD Athlon II X4 635/AMD Phenom II X2 555BE ~ 4.5k

GSkill 2x2GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM ~ 3k

Regarding your question:-

As you know, there is no 'sure success' unlock chance for 555BE. Though, there is a good probability that the 555BE unlocks into a quad and so it makes it a great VFM. But, even if we consider unlock chances which are gamble of the cores being unstable/not existing then you are stuck with a X2 processor. In addition to this, unlocking voids your warranty too.

So, I would recommend the AMD Athlon II X4 635.

Even lacking a L3 cache doesn't stop the Athlon II from easily catching up with the Phenom II in single thread apps as well the Multi-threaded apps.

does unlocking void the warranty?
how come they would know if cpu was unlocked since its the motherboard that does unlocking right?

Bro anything that is out of company jurisdiction ( after market cooler, overclocking, unlocking etc. etc. ) voids warranty and that means trouble and huge bills or no replacements :)

intresting, but never seen anyone getting denied of RMA bcoz of aftermarket cooler, overclocking(to some xtent) so is it real or one off case.

can anyone confirm if warranty voids after unlocking?

Well, some say unlocking doesn't voids warranty and I agree with it.

As far as I've read(never have unlocked cores myself), unlocking is by software and no hardware changes is made.

So, if I remove the CPU from the motherboard, then its same as it was when I bought it..they way AMD configured it.

I was just pin-pointing out a situation, that the OP 'may' run into.

I am not sure about my statement but it is from the theoretical standpoint.Say you unlock a phenom ii x2 555be to quads.due to high temps the cpu gets damaged and the four cores that are enabled will be so(although whether the rma guys have the ability to check a dead cpu for unlocked cores seems unprobable)the BIOS settings shouldn't be the only thing that unlocks your cpu.The cpu itself has a core logic where it stores the variables like T(junction),core cache communication variables, the SSE executables. That's where the change should occur for it to becomea quad.but the rma guys can't check it for four cores(come on it's dead and they aren't no CSI forensic experts:P)but has anyone come across a denied RMA due to unlocked cores?

Guys the OP says he needs a mobo with Xfire support and see few suggesting him mobos that doesnt support Xfire. Better read up the OP's requirements fully before suggesting him something.

Sigh. Missed to read that part. :-/

Sorry OP.

Hmm, sounds reasonable.

I want someone to post their experience when they went to RMA their CPU(with unlocked cores).

I thought binnning of the cores and multiplier was a hardware process, pseudo-reflected in software, guess I'm wrong then :S :ashamed:

Thanks mate, I think I 'll go with your suggestions. Was waiting for you to comment in this thread. :)

Thanks everyone else for chipping in too
