Hi guys,

I need to buy a 17 inch or a 19 inch monitor. I've decided to go for a CRT as I still think LCDs are not where CRTs are in terms of picture quality and there are new models coming out everyday that make you wish you had waited just a little longer(Not sure everyone would agree with me here but it's my opinion. Feel free to comment otherwise. I'd like to read your arguments.)

If any of you guys have a good 17 inch or 19 inch CRT and are very satisfied with it, do recommend the model to me. Also, can you let me know in your experience, if you find a flat screen better than a curved one(Again, in my opinion, a curved screen makes for a more immersive experience but this may surely be my hang-up only as I have been accustomed to curved screens for so long.)

Also, what is the approx. depth of a 17 inch or 19 inch CRT? I'm asking because I don't think a 19 inch would fit on my 2 ft deep table that holds my 14 inch currently :).

Do give your inputs on the subject.

Thank you.

I don't exactly have a budget laid out. It would depend on the features. I think 17 or 19 inch CRTs would be priced around the same range in their resp. categories don't you? If I have to give a no., it would be max 15K for really really good CRT.

I would still suggest that you go for a 19" LCD. If you insist on a CRT then look for the Magic Bright series in Samsung. These are made such that the depth and weight is less than the competing models. I have the 17" version of this and its depth is like that if a 15" and weight is 2 kg less than other 17" models. 19" Model I think is Samsung SyncMaster 997MB.

If you really must have a CRT, get the 997MB/DF or the philips flat 19". However you are better off with a viewsonic VA1912W for that kind of money.

The MagicBright has some special technology that emits pleasant rays etc (some stuff I read on the samsung india website). Not sure I want my monitor emitting anything. Anyway w.r.t. design, I hope they have not compromised any quality to get less depth.
VA1912W is a little old compared to Viewsonic's new VX922 and VX924 models(with better response time) I think. Anyway Chaos, how would you rate this LCD vs a CRT? Could I view the picture from any angle and still see it the same? What's the contrast ratio and how's the contrast like in your opinion? One issue I have is that it's a widescreen and I hate widescreens. I still prefer the old 4:3 aspect ratio as I feel it's unnatural to stretch the picture lengthwise and not give it enough height.
The 997MB/DF I will definitely consider(I saw a 997DF in another technclave member's<Karan's> house. Beautiful color reproduction). Just don't know if the model is still available.

The VA1912W is a budget lcd won't do too well in color reproduction. If you really want the best in color and viewing angles, get a display with an S-IPS panel such has Dell 2005 or 2007WFP/NEC 20WMGX2/Apple Cinema Display. They'll beat any CRT in color reproduction. Once you get used to widescreens, there's no going back :P. Feels odd for a few days but then there's nothing that beats coding with the panel aligned vertically... So much more screen space :D

Acer AF715 17" CRT is the best period, it's the only 17" CRT currently available which can display 1600x1200@75Hz That too it costs a cool Rs.6k for LCDs Go for Samsung 740B 17" LCD with DVI Input 8ms Response Time 1280x1024 Resolution:D It costs Rs.16,000 (approx)

Yes, I've heard of the Dell Ultrasharp and Apple Cinema displays(think the Dell is better). Only thing is, the good models are too big for my taste and I'm sure they'd cost a bomb. Another issue would be availability. Anyone know where to get these in Bangalore?
I would be perfectly satisfied with a 17 inch or max a 19 inch monitor. (Don't want my monitor rivalling my 21 inch TV :)) Don't get me wrong, I know the appeal of large screen monitors to watch movies and game 'n other functions with great picture quality.

But is one really comfortable sitting 2 feet away from such a large screen? Don't your eyes get strained seeing everything so big?

Say...no one have anything to say about 17 inch CRTs? Everyone has suggested 19 inch models. I take it then everyone is in consensus that 19 inch is a more comfortable resolution on the eyes?

Evox, do you know what the running or native resolution for a 17 inch and a 19 inch CRT monitor is? Why I'm asking is that I plan to use a 6800 GT or 6800 Ultra AGP which I'm guessing can play games with all the eye candy enabled and maintain a respectable frame rate only at 1024 X 768(Not very sure about this..please correct me if I'm wrong). So a higher resolution may not be the right choice for a person with an older graphics card.

@sydrax

Upto 24" is fine sitting 2 feet away...personal preference I guess...

For me the size of the monitor is limited only by my room size :D

and my pocket :@

Nope MB series doesnt emit any kind of magic rays..:) Its definitely better than the regular montors. MB refers to the 4 present brightness modes suitable for specific uses like gaming, movies, text and internet etc.

Regarding the widescreen, you may be concerned about the screen area, but should not be concerned about how such an aspect looks. ever heard about the pleasing rectange ratio. its value is somewhere near 1.7 and is supposed to be the most pleasing ratio for a rectange. The widescreen ratios are near to this ratio.

Yup how big a monitor I have is only dependent on the amount of dough in my wallet :D. The response time on my dell is 12ms and it pwns the newer 4ms LCDs in speed. The dells are expensive in india but if you can carry one back from sing or usa, then they are cheap. I got mine for roughly the equivalent of 18k in february.

I've just checked the Samsung 798MB Plus at
SAMSUNG's Digital World - EFT Monitors | 798MBPLUS
Seems that it emits some far infrared rays. Anyway, I'm limited by colour choice as I want a white/ivory coloured monitor. Hope there is a white coloured model in store.
Say, I checked the Viewsonic India website. The E71f that people have recommended in earlier threads does not seem to be available. Anyone know where I can get such a monitor in Bangalore? Also any opinions on Viewsonic vs Samsung. Which company manufactures better CRTs?

I've heard of the pleasing ratio but it does not work for me. I bought a 14 inch widscreen compaq laptop for my brother but could not get used to the low screen height(you are correct in that screen area makes a big difference...I might have felt better with a bigger screen). Nice job on the display though. The CrystalBrite (or whatever) tech gives a CRT like feel with the glossy screen and one can see from the side also. It was a relief compared to the Dell laptop that I'm using now.

In my opinion buy the Viewsonic G-76F+SB because it supports -

2048x1536@60Hz

1920x1440@64Hz

1792x1344@68Hz

1600x1200@77Hz

1280x1024@88Hz

1152x864@104Hz

The monitor equips with 0.25mm ultra-fine aperture grille pitch DismondTron tube and combines with a 2048x1536 high resolution. According to the company, the UltraBrite technology has a 3-5 times higher brightness level than normal CRT for optimum viewing pleasure; the SmartBoard III image replay technology that brings absolute precision in image display controls without affecting the color tones and leaving any imaging flickers.

will cost you 7-8k

or the Viewsonic G-90F for 12-14k

only the G & P Series of Viewsonic are better than Samsung MB & DF Series

warranty is a seperately purchasable item for Dell. So it might be possible to get a LCD or laptop in US and purchase local warranty for it here. Not sure though.
