As the title says, i have about 6k to spend on HDD(s). I am very confused as to which one to get.

Was thinking of getting Seagate 320GB 7200.10 drives but 've been reading a lot of them going kaput..

a friend suggested getting Hitachi T7K500 320GB, how's this one?

any other suggestions.

(the budget can be stretched a bit)

Another query, is it better to get two drives and run in RAID 0 or a single larger drive.

after 2 failed Seagate 320GB 7200.10 i went in for hitachi as replacement through my dealer. Its slightly slower in behchmarks than seagate but its not noisy and its my 3rd hitachi drive. No issues with any of the 3 hitachi drives so far. Starting to develop brand loyalty.

There are other members who are having no issues with Seagate but i have had 2 bad experiences back to back. Even replacement drive went kaput within week. Gave up on Seagate in the end.

Hmm.....looks like hitachi will get my money next time as well :P

Say guys, is 320gb still the sweet spot?

@funky, which hitachi did you buy as the replacement? the one mentioned above or something else.

^For how much?

and any words on this:

The Hitachi T7K500 320GB is a nice drive. It is silent and fast enough ..... BUT ... I like the NEW Hitachi 7K160 160GB HDD more than the 320GB. This 160GB is a bit faster and very cool running.... its a single platter HDD and I bought 3 of them - the last one cost me 2665/- from APEX. This 160GB HDD runs cool even in an external case.

^ So, would you suggest me getting two of these 160Giggers (in RAID 0) instead of a 320?

I wouldn't. 2 drives would always make more noise and give off more heat than a single drive. Plus consume more power. Plus double the chances of failure

I dont like to RAID HDDs ... I feel its too risky for the speed gain it gives..... thats the way I think .... you can RAID them if you want.

@zhopudey... I run 2 - 4 HDDs in my Antec P160 case and they all run around the same temps ... right now 3 HDDs all at 34 - 35 C. I cannot hear any Drive sounds - not at all - not even at late night when there is no street noise !! The Hitachi's are very silent in my computer case. I agree with you of double the chance of failure with RAID 0.

So the Hitachi T7K500 320GB seems to be the best way to go then? ...

Any other suggestions?

Raid 0 is too risky unless you completely backup your entire data regularly. If the raid array fails due to some reason ( may not be hardware issue as such) then you loose every single byte of data. If 1 HDD fails then too you loose everything.

Thats why i prefer not to use raid 0.

If you want 2 HDDs or not is upto you.
