I made this suggestion earlier to somebody else too.! Take your mom out to the showroom and let her choose! The colour,form factor,looks!! Let her have the experience of choosing something she likes! I am sure the experience will be rewarding for you as well!

Check out the Nokia Asha series. It also had some handsets with a Touch N Type functionality if she would be fine with it.

I got Samsung Primo recently for my Mom, as she was not inclined towards touchscreen phones... Its a good phone for its price. Best thing is battery backup, its been 3 days and its showing full charge, although usage is not much (an hour a day) ... Asha 300 is also good but its battery backup is less and you dont get autofocus cam ...

^^ My suggestion of the X2-02 still stands. And it is by far the loudest phone out there! Search on youtube for loudness comparisons between the X2-02 and other phones including the iphone 4!

dont get the touch n type phones from nokia,its going to bust in few months.

im also in your same dillemma and planning to get my mom a phone.considering the samsung primo and nokia c5 and sony cedar.

have used the C5 before and wasnt impressed by the speaker volume(its down facing).

the cedar is a beauty but little bulky and speaker aint tat great.

since the phone is mostly used for calling,i guess the samsung is VFM.

Got my mom the touch 'n' type from Nokia. She didn't like it one bit. The touch screen is resistive not capacitive.
