Laptops which one of these?

A friend of mine needs a laptop within 30K. Now I am not very good person to rely on as far as laptops are concerned but still I have shortlisted four. Now I need help from TE gurus to finalise one of them

1- Acer Aspire 4520

AMD X2 TK55 (1.8 Ghz)

1GB DDR2 RAM

Nvidia 7000m gfx

160GB HD

DVD-RW

14.1 WXGA TFT

Cost around Rs 28,000

2- Compaq F733AU

AMD X2 TK58 (1.9 Ghz)

512 MB RAM

120GB HD

DVD-RW

15.4 WXGA TFT

Nvidia 7000m

Price Rs 25,500

3- Compaq C772TU

Intel Dual Core 1.73 Ghz

2 GB RAM

160 GB HD

DVD-RW

15.4 WXGA TFT

Cost around Rs 29,500

4- ACER 4720-Z

Intel Dual core 1.6 Ghz

2 GB RAM

160 GB HD

DVD-RW

14.1 WXGA TFT

Cost Rs 29,250

Also suggest any other better laptop in the same price range and also tell me if the price quotes that I have got are OK or not?

On a side note, I would love to know how AMD's Turion series fare against Intel's mobile DUAL CORE series (Core 2 Due is definitely ahead i know). People who have AMD based lappies can share their experiences

From a usability point of view the difference between 1.73 Dual, 1.8 Dual, 1.9 dual are negligible. In fact so negligible that you'd never notice the difference. But the price difference can be quite a lot. As far as dual cores are concerned, AMD is better than Intel for one simple reason -- they are cheaper, yet more powerful. But among the AMDs, the cheapest is the Athlon series. The Turions are more expensive. But try to get a Turion based laptop if battery life is an issue. Athlons suck at battery life. You could pick up the Compaq C772TU, as is seems to provide more for the money, but it comes minus a graphics card. Unless your friend wants to play games on his laptop that required 3D graphics acceleration, get the Compaq C772TU. By the way, hope it doesn't come pre-installed with Vista.

Need inputs fast... usage is general office work (MS word etc), Internet surfing and movies.

I am leaning towards Acer ones as they are 14.1" (portability) and have bluetooth.

But i have heard bad things about Acer. Is it true?

well the 3rd option seems the best one for you.

as far as acer is concerned they have a good sturdy build quality, keys are qute ergonomic but they suck at battry life. The first few monts are fine and den the drop in standby is startling.

Using an Acer 4520 since past two months- it is a very good package- it is quite fast- the LCD is quite bright- best is the sound with Dolby is very good. I find the battery back up to be good. U should be able to pick it up now for 25k VFM and so light , compact and elegant.

25K? are you sure about it coz i was quoted 28K. I don't think the dealer will go below 27K

I have an acer laptop since Jan 2006.

I have always liked the LCD quality as compared to the compaq and HP ones which most people I know had.

Was not very satisfied with the build quality but even after rough usage of over two years its working great. The build quality of acer laptops has improved significantly since then.

Battery life dropped down to 50% after one year of usage which is quite normal.

Never faced any other tech issues. However I have seen people struggle with the DVD drive in one particular model. But then there are lots of cases in other brands as well.

So I can say that its a very good VFM laptop.

not to spoil the acer party going on over here,

but morgoth is there any specific reason y uv keep dell out of the options here? cause trust me a lot of people here would agree with me here that its far superior in quality to the acers for sure..

so y rnt u considering dell?

I am not buying it dear. I am just trying to guide one of my friends. He has max budget of 30K. Not a single penny more.
I don't think that he can get a Dell lappy with this budget
So far, he is inclining towards Compaq C772TU. What u say?

thats a good choice .. only draw back is the processor.. if the work done on the lappy is not demanding more power + all the patience in the world = 1 happy lappy owner ;)

This is without taxes. with taxes the price will be a little more. There is no way my friend is gonna go for that.

BTW, thanks for the input

I have owned Acer for over 4 yrs and it still works tho it's with sister.

Cheap Acer's are made of low quality materials.I wud go with one of better cust service.

Acer 4720z excellent, i heard it is 28800 in Bangalore.

4270-Z is nice lappy but my friend has decided upon Compaq C772TU. He feels Compaq is more popular and has better support. Also C772TU has a slightly better CPU than 4270-Z

Now my TE friends, wht i need is price quote for C772TU. Right now dealer is asking for Rs 29,000. is it fair?
Guys with sources in markets, please chip in
