PC Peripherals Which RAM to get from US?

A friend is coming down frm the US, and I'm thinking of getting RAM from there, as the options here are not so great. Problem is, I havent finalised on my config yet, so I dont have a fixed budget for the RAM. Still, I suppose I could spare around 5000/-, with a maximum of 6000/-, though less would of course be better.

My first question is, is it generally safe to get RAM from there? What are the chances of getting a faulty or DOA product?

I'm planning to get a Venice, and either an A8N-E or Neo4 Platinum. I'll like to try out OCing, with all your help of course. I'll mainly be doing 3D animation and audio/video editing, as well as games.
So please suugest the best RAM for me. Actually, it would be better if you could just post the link from where my friend should buy. Ohhh, I'll be needing 1Gb, I suppose.

And also, just in case my plans for new rig get delayed or something, it would be better if this RAM works on my current Krypton NF2400U nForce2 Ultra mobo. Or else I'll just have to sell it on TE I guess.

Please reply soon.

But thats more than 7000Rs!!!!!!!!!
I said i'll just try out OCing, not trying to break any records

Thanks for the quick reply though....

Check out the OCZ series of Rams , they are gr8 OCers
List of All OCZ Rams:- http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/
They also have low budget solutions.

Also check Rams which dont require more than 3V to OC a lot higher
Such are rams with TCCD chips which OC to 270 280 at Low Volts but cost high also.
But you will require more than 3V approx if you go more than 250 at tight times on WinBond BH-5.
if you go more than

Also check solutions from GSkill , Patriot , Giel.

Its just over 6K. You won't get better value than that. Why skimp on RAM for just 500 bucks?

@quad: TCCD cant be had at <150$

Both BH-5 and ocz low budget is useless on these motherboards you are planning.
OCZ Platinum series no longer comes with tccd so beaware of that.
You need a good tccd/tcc4 Ram as your motherboard options will not provide too high voltages.
Your options are very limited with budget of 6000.
But there is Kingston HyperX PC3200.( doublecheck this one as some are known to carry other chips)
Twinmos twister pro( all have tccd be it 3200,3700/4000/4400 specifications)
corsair xmx pc3200c2(rev 4)
Some of these will be very close to your budget.
But do remember that in any case do not get BH-5 based RAM unless you plan to import motherboards like DFI NF4.

What i've understood so far -
1) tccd and winbond are 2 chips.
2) Winbond bh-5/6 good for overclocking, but need higher voltages, which means a DFI mobo.

Is this correct?

Hey quad, checked the ocz site, but their mobo compatibilty section mentions neither a8n-e nor neo4 P

TCCD do good on even lower than 3v ......BH-5 starts where above 3v ....which the DFI mobo supports....so for the rest of them u mite need TCCD which will do great on normal mobos.....

Thanks for the link rocky, but instead of helping, it has only succeded in making me -

addled, agape, aghast, agog, appalled, astonished, astounded, awestruck, awed, baffled, befuddled, bewildered, bowled over, confused, dazed, dazzled, disconcerted, dizzy, dumbfounded, dumbstruck, flabbergasted, flipped out, floored, flustered, giddy, lost, misled, muddled, mystified, perplexed, punchy, puzzled, rattled, reeling, shocked, shook up, speechless, staggered, startled, struck speechless, stumped, stunned, stupefied, surprised, taken aback, thrown, thunderstruck, uncertain, unglued.

So i'll change my question -

Which 1GB RAM would you buy from the US for <6K Rs for use with either A8N-E or Neo4 Platinum, intended for casual OCing?

Ocz EL is again winbond CH-5 chips. This means it will need some juice to overclock.
Corsair in the link uses TCC5. Its a good RAM but it has compatability issues with many motherboards. It certainly has problems with DFI NF4 and MSI NF4 motherboards.
Not sure about the ASUS.
Your best bet is to get the better RAM if you are importing it from US.
Look for Geil PC3500 or even Geil PC4000.
They both use TCC4/TCCD. Its better than TCC5 for sure.

I checked on the corsair site, and there its mentioned that this ram is compatible with both the mobos.

Geil pc4000 is for 134$. - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144517

But one person has said this -
Installed in a A8N-SLI with FX555 & dual 6800GT. With Newegg Kingston valueram I scored 10060 on 3Dmark05. With this RAM I only got 9200. Tried various timings and MHz with no luck. Perhaps it works better on other rigs.

Also, I read that AMD systems prefer lower latencies rather than faster speeds.

That PC4000 will run at 2-2-2-5 @ DDR400.
And there can be several reason for lower scores in 3dmark.
Corsair dosent mention anything with the value line either but their value select has some serious problems with A8N-E.
Dont believe what the manufacturer tells you.
And it finally boils down to the chips on the Stick.
And tccd and tcc4 are the chips to get. tcc4 will overclock good with 2.9-3.0v.
tccd will be better of course. but Geil is mixing chips on its line. it can be tccd or tcc4.

Doubt if that can hit 2-2-2-5. TCCD ain't that cheap. Even the PC3200 variety will cost atleast 200$ a gig. From the reviews at newegg it seems more likely that they are either hynix d43 or tcc4. At 150$, I don't think you'd get a good deal unless you go winbond. The BH die based winbonds will do 2-2-2 @400MHz at 2.8V or so. You can always run it at tight timings with a divider. It might reach around 230-240 at 3.3V. The newer BH dies don't respond so well to voltages as the older ones. Its the CH that loves 3.5V+ and is scaling to crazy freqs. (Thats whats used in OCZ VX, Mushkin Redline and Geil UltraX)

Oh yes it can do 2-2-2-5. If its tccd it will do it at 2.6 or even 2.55v.
If its tcc4 it will do these timings at little higher volts. If not 2-2-2 it will atleast do 2-3-3 or 2-3-2.)
And geil is using tccd and tcc4 on their line and even then its that cheap. There was a thread on XS. Thats why i bought Geil after asking guys over at XS.
And there are plenty of tccds in sub $200 market.
OCZ EL and platinum older versions which used to carry tccd were below $200. they still are.

The expensive ones are hand picked and selected to run at perticular speeds and hence the cost.
But almost evert tccd chip overclocks well. be it cheaper on more expensive options.
Same goes to tcc4. The only problem with tcc4 is it cant do insane speeds that tccd does. TCCDs go well above 300Mhz many times. tcc4 cant go that high unless you are lucky one.

And this one is guaranteed tccd.
