Wi-Fi Doubt! Help ME!

Hi!
I am a noob when it comes to networking. And it seems i need some help from someone who knows about routers!

I am a student , My college has Wi-Fi internet and i get reception in my hostel . I have a netbook and it has bad reception for Wi-Fi than usual laptops , I came to this deduction because my friend's laptop catches reception in my room, but not my netbook. So i want to know what i can do to increase the reception in my netbook . My roommate has a desktop and so he also wants to get wi -fi somehow. So it will be appreciated if anyone can come up with a solution to my dilemma.

Can a router catch the signal and transmit it to my netbook and connect to my roommate's desktop via LAN cable?

Thanks in advance!

It's possible that your friends laptop supports 802.11n (wi-fi networking standard) and your netbook supports only 802.11b or g. 802.11n has about double the range of 802.11b/g. If this is indeed the case, it would explain why he can connect to the net when you can't.
You'll need a wi-fi repeater to extend the range of the network...but since it's your colleges network I'm not sure if you'll be able to do that.
Get a usb wi-fi adaptor for your friends PC, and if it gives him a decent signal in your room, then buy one for yourself. Make sure you get a 802.11n adaptor as anything else may be useless. It shouldn't cost you more than Rs.1500

Get something like this:TP-Link High-Power Wireless USB Adapter (TL-WN722N)

Thanks guys, It helped me out of my confusion for what should i look for!

My netbook actually has 802.11n i looked for that when i bought it, Because of the reception.

A repeater catches the range and magnify it right? how can i do that?

Most adapters which are practical in my room have like 5 dB or 4 dB antenna, How effective is a 4 dB antenna?
Can i further increase the reception somehow? My college is a good 150 m away from my hostel. ( at my hostel ground floor i get average level of signal in my netbook, which gives me great speeds , but an unstable connection)
I will be happy if i get a stable connection with slightly slow speeds.
The connection between the antenna and the adapter looks like the usual coaxial cable, if i connect a crimped coaxial cable and leave it outside my window will i get better reception?

Thanks i advance!
