Wifi acting wierd

I am using MTNL Wifi ADSL modem. The distance between my laptop and the modem/router is around 30 feet and it is not in line of sight. The issue is i am facing that when trying to open any webpage, it opens in a very very sluggish manner and most of the times, it does not open. It is like, there is absolutely no transfer happening between the modem and laptop.

So as a workaround, i have to start any torrent download which sucks the entire bandwidth fully and then i can start my surfing activities properly.

So it is quiet weird that usual surfing is not happening properly unless i start something else downloading behind.

Why so ??

^^ Signal strength varies from 36 Mbps to 54 Mbps.

QoS enabled ?? Where to see this ??

Wifi mode i dont know but my lappy wifi is N compatible but not sure about BSNL Modem, that will be less than N since max i am getting is 54 Mbps.

See with torrents it is utilizing the entire bandwidth of 1 Mbps.

hey just as you mentioned , same thing is happening with me , but with desktop ! its connected through LAN cable from my wifi router ... (I'm using tata indicom bb)
