Wifi coverage, speed and PCI adapter replacement querry

Hi

Am going to buy my first laptop. And I have some questions regarding wifi.

1) If my wifi router is in another closed room, will I be able to use it for internet from a distance of 20 feet in another room without an loss of speed?

2)I actually don't have a wifi router but a normal one.
So, is there any possibility that I can use a cheap PCI wifi adapter to
connect to internet simultaneously on both my desktop PC and my laptop
present in two different rooms 20 ft apart? And will there be any speed problem with this?

1. There will be some loss of speed for the wi-fi connection. However the wi-fi connection speed should still be faster than what your broadband connection will provide.

2. You will need to wire an ethernet cable to your PC. The PCI wi-fi adapter on your PC needs to support ad-hoc networks. It can then be configured for internet sharing, and you can access the internet on your laptop via this PC as long as its powered on. I would say not worth the hassle, since there are wi-fi routers for as cheap as ~1k now.

Depends on the distance, you should be able to get a decent signal, but if the distance is too much, you will get disconnections and timeouts.

Yes, assuming you have a modem, all you need to do is get a wifi card which has windows 7 support. then get this fantastic software called virtual router, and use it to make your PC into a router. It will allow you to access your wired LAN internet thru wifi!

And what about the distance or if the rooms are closed?

Weak signals. Disconnections and timeouts.

PCI adapter have very low coverage, especially if your desktop sits at bottom of a table & very close a wall (like mine).
In my case, there's no coverage to opposite room, but laptop picks up signal in adjacent room.

One more thing is, in order to use your laptopfor internet, you'll HAVE to turn on desktop & keep it running till you want to use internet.
Instead buy a wifi modem + router or just a wifi router.with a router you have the freedom of placing it anywhere so that ithas best coverage.ifi router.with a router you have the freedom of placing it anywhere so that ithas best coverage.
