Wifi solution for my house

I went through a few threads in the section but was unable to figure out much so decided to create this thread :D

I have a bsnl ut300r2u(i.e non wifi modem) for my home broadband connection. This is connected to two desktops kept adjacent to each other through ethernet and usb from the modem, one of which I want to move to my upstairs room. What all should I get to set up wifi for my house? Not sure about range needed so going with ~100ft, able to connect with at least the 2pcs, a mobile and laptop. Please suggest some vfm solutions for me.

since you already have a adsl modem purchase a wifi router (should cost around 1200 for belkin) and connect the wan port of your router to lan port of your adsl modem.

Otherwise you can approach BSNL and ask them to change your adsl modem to a wifi model. I guess they'll be able to do that for a nominal fee or even for free. At least MTNL does that here for 300Rs.

So I either get a wifi modem or a wifi router(1-1.5k) and a wifi adapter for one of my desktops(~0.7k)? Are the pci wifi adapters better than the usb ones in terms of reception/reliability?

Planning to go for ut300r2u->buffalo n150 router->asus wl-167g adapter. Is that fine?

^ chiron your plan seems ok for wireless connectivity but make sure its worth it.

otherwise get a LAN wire instead of adapter costs 300 bucks but i am not sure about speeds for the range you gave

^^Sorry for hijacking the thread but why does one need an adapter when he's already got a router?

I guess for the pc to recieve the wifi signal from the router.

The reason I went wifi is coz my house shape is such that running lan wires would be a bit of a hassle. Anyway ordered them couple of days back, hopefully they will serve my requirements.

Got them today and wifi/internet worked right out of the box for both pcs. However the it is taking long for copying files from one pc to another; avg 7mb/s speed only when signal strenght is showing excellent. Are there any settings I need to make to get the transfer over lan to be the faster?

^^ Now I am starting to get lot of variation in speeds(one moment it shows 72mbps and next its 14mbps), frequent disconnections(while there is no problem on the pc connected through lan cable) and 150mbps mode is totally unusable as the connectiviy problems get even worse. The pc with the wifi reciever is only 6m from the router and separated by a single wall. I had already given up on lan transfers but now its not even holding a decent connection for internet; this really wasn't what I signed up for :@

Any ideas on what is going wrong here? I am guessing maybe some kind of interference is there... but what appliances could cause that(speakers, other pc, hifi system)?
