Hey guys, i have a prob with winXP. if i leave the comp idle for 5 min it goes into hibernation and when i shake the mouse the inital choose user screen appears and i have to enter my password again. i disabled hibernation from the control panel and even disabled asking for the password after recovering from hibernation but it still happens. what do i do?

It is Hibernation or Standby you are talking about, Hibernation would should down the system, I think it is standby your computer is entering so disable standby :)

Do you have multiple login's for xp, also are you using the admin account.

Ok check this registry entry, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg - CurrentPowerPolicy, check if its set to 3 if not, do it and reboot. Here are the diff values :

  • 0 = Home/Office Desk
  • 1 = Portable/Laptop
  • 2 = Presentation
  • 3 = Always On
  • 4 = Minimal Power Management
  • 5 = Max Battery

so if you set it to 3 it means it is in Always ON mode.

OR, If you using xp sp2 or server 2003 there is command line utility powercfg which can do the job. More here.

If your system still enters standby mode then check in your bios for power settings, change it there.

Or you can try changing the global power settings via HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\PowerCfg.

Yea xp sp2 with multiple logins and im the admin. Thanks dipdude :) Ill check the registry. Tho the link u gave points to a page for win server 2003 :P

edit: just read the last partof ur post :hap2:

lolz...the user screen comes up most probably cause u have selected tht option in the screen saver window....so if ur screen saver becomes active...u move ur mouse and the logon screen will come....
just diable tht simply from the Screen Saver poperties box..:)

^ Ice, the user screen would also appear on wake up from standby mode, if the option of "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" is enabled.

About screensaver, i hope our dear friend hunt3r knows the difference between Screensaver Mode and Standby Mode ;)

but he said he removed standby mode...and the screensaver is usually set at 5 mins suration...so i was guessing it could be the cause of the logon screen coming up..:)

Lol, just checked out icefusion's suggestion. It was the screensaver :S. Even though i had disabled standby after 10 min it was set to welcome screen. Oh well at least its solved now, thanks icefusion ;)

lol, great, so you proved me wrong, you really dont know the difference between a Screensaver Mode and Stand By Mode :S

Anyways problem solved :)

Im not that bad :P I just didnt think it was the screensaver, i assumed it was going on standby coz i din think it would ask for a password after the screensaver. anyways problem solved. mods close thread please.
