Hi,
My computer hardware configuration is as follows
cpu: Intel core 2 duo P8600 @2.4ghz which supports 64 bit.
Ram : 3GB
Hdd: 300gb

I am facing a dilemma whether should i get a windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit. I know the ram is less for 64 bit windows but i am planning to buy extra ram as soon as i get a good deal on it that is if i go with 64 bit. So i would like to know should i install a 64 bit OS or 32 bit one. I would highly appreciate your help if you can help me with this.

Thanks
Jeff

I think u've a laptop for installing win 7. and for it 64-bit won't show any edge above 32-bit version. So you should straight go for 32-bit version. 64-bit has advantage on systems built for heavy executions such as hi-end gaming, graphical rendering etc. By going 64-bit u won't see any difference above 32-bit on ur laptop and u'll also hav to buy 1gig more ram for it...so my suggestion is to stick with ur config and go for 32-bit Windows 7.

and if u've extra cash to buy more ram for ur lappy than spend it on buying a good usb sound card...it'll be a better investment.

bro, if you're not going to add any more ram in the future, then go for x86 if you're going to add more ram (i.e. 4gb or more in total) then u definitely need x64. Its as simple as that.

At this point, there is no point in sticking with 32bit OS on modern hardware including laptops even if you have less than 4GB RAm in system.

64bit supports 4GB or more system memory, but that does not mean 64bit will run slower than 32bit OS if you have 3GB Ram.

You will get added benefits of being able to use 64bit versions of some programs (yes, I know there are very few ).

2 gb ram is enough for 64 bit windows 7.so do not worry.the os is not a memory hogger so wont be any problems with that.i have seen windows 7 work flawlessly on a dell laptop with 2 gig ram (64 bit).

i finally got the win 7 Ultimate key from my student partner friend for a sweet 1.5k it is compatible with both 32 bit and 64bit versions :D i was wondering which version to install ??? the 64 bit win 7 that i am running now is build 7229 and seem s a bit sluggish that is when i do copying operations it slows down quite a bit i hope this is not the case with the final build.and also one more thing i have a single stick 2gig corsair ram will that affect performance in any way

I think if you purchase the retail box you get both the 32-bit and 64-bit installation discs. Perhaps someone who has done so can confirm this.

I'll still say that there is no point to invest on 1gig more ram. since u wont be gaming hard on laptop...neither u'll be OCing it to bench it...so wats the use to install 64-bit since 32-bit will give equivalent performance without upgrading ram...but if u want to use 64-bit then don't settle below 4 gig...bcoz 64-bit OS requires atleast 4 gigs of ram to run smoothly.

Jeff_00789,
To determine if your current computer configuration will be compatible with Windows 7 and whether you would benefit more from the 32-bit or 64-bit version please go to the following link: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

Stop creating confusion. :@

I'm running Win 7 64bit with 2GB. There's no lag or any problem in games like Far Cry 2, CRYSIS, WARHEAD etc at highest setting.

I do not see any benefits of using 64 bit OS unless you want to use some apps which require more than 4 GB ram. There is not much perf difference as most of the apps are still 32 bit.
