Windows XP Reinstall !

Anish

Forerunner
I currently have Windows XP installed with SP2. I wanna do a clean install.

Is there any way I can save my start menu and desktop icons, cause all my programs are installed in another drive, C: only has the OS...

Please help !

if you specifically only want your start menu and desktop, copy "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop" and "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu" folders. If you want other stuff like your firefox bookmarks, etc just copy your entire "C:\Documents and Settings\" folder. And take stuff from there when you realize they are missing.

The this is there will be registry keys missing so some software may not work anyway.

1:
from inside windows you can reinstall, but that would amount to upgrade, your shortcut's, program files etc will be saved, only problem is it just overwrites on existing sp2, messy for sure but might help if your sp2 is messed up (not your clean install) :(
[i'm pretty sure but just reconfirm, all your settings would be saved]

2:
for clean install, that is deleting your program files, windows etc you can boot from cd & do the install on same partition, your settings wont be saved, but your os is as good as new :) in clean install you would have to reinstall everything from scratch.

p.s - in both the options your files & folders(stuff) are safe, they wont be deleted unless you format b4 installing.
can you also give reasons for why you want to reinstall.

Hey Anish, even if you save the icons and the programs are installed in another drive (which is a good idea), reinstalling windows removes all their registry entries. Some programs use Windows drive for storing some files even though they are installed in another partition.

Many of the bigger programs, games wont work cuz they will be missing the registry entries and certain files which reside in C. Almost all the small programs will work.

Raghu.

hi anish,

either way u re-install or even if u leave the file system intact for a reinstall, u will loose all file and registry association, which is u will no longer be able to use the software intended as the registry related to it doesnot exists.

^^ Yup thats ok, cause I checked only few apps that I use make registry entries and I can reinstall them easily...

Thanks for the tip ! Copying the Documents & Settings is the easy way out...:D
