i need a help regarding my friend's x1950pro.....he has a 350w with 17A on 12v psu...on powering the system, it booted up, got to the password entry screen, and when windows tries to detect the card, it freezes....and windows screen completely hangs...only windows logo on the screen, as if it's going to complete booting and get the desktop etc, but no progress.....
.......so he hard resets....and restarts....and then again the same thing happens...
Is it the classic case of psu being insufficient? isn't 17A on 12V sufficient for x1950pro.... (i agree this 17a is shared by his e6400 also)....what psu should he go for...
thx

minimum Zebronics 540W Diamond Series, Coolermaster Extreme Power 600W, Powersafe 500W (L&C OEM) or Antec Basiq 500W needed

but doesn't the graphics card need only 70-75W?...anyway, which psu of these can be recommended for a budget of 2-2.5k (i think only powersafe 500w fits the bill)

A quality 350w PSU will run that card fine, sounds like your buddy is using some generic Intex PSU. If he's upgrading, get a quality 500w - Powersafe 500w is decent if he doesn't have a 5-6k budget.

^phoenix:who is the heaven's name told you that....even 1900XTX doesnt require that much of power..

the card will run fine on a psu having a single rail dedicated to the card and supplying about 18-20A on that rail.

that's correct. My X1900XT runs without a hitch on my Enermax 430 watt PSU with dual 12V rails that offer 15A and 14A. Well of course when I say 'well' I mean stable. As far as software monitoring in concerned, my rails are rock solid at 11.9V, 3.25V and 5V. I haven't tried the multimeter way but then again, like I said, my system seems to run stably.

and Udit:

that's plain excessive. Any quality 400 watt PSU will do I should think. Judging by my machine's performance that is.

nah a good 400w psu would be somehting of the seventeam standards and not just any decent 400W psu will suffice for x1900XT...IMO get a Coolermaster 600W cos its pure value for money at 3.6k

A small tip that may help. Just give it sometime when u feel its hung/stuck at some point. I had a similar scene when i got my x1900xt, while booting, it used to stuck at the logon screen, but mostly the screen w'd remain blank after the logon screen but before the desktop is loaded. since the time used to be as long as even 20 secs, with no hard disk LED showing up for the time I also presumed it to be hung & reset it. Chaos only confirmed that this happens with his x1900xt as well. So i gave it some time & yes it always boots, sometime soon but sometime upto 30 secs.

So just try it out, & see for the HDD led also. may be u fall at luck.. Do let u know.

The issue i guess was only with the NFORCE4 chipsets only. may be some driver check from ATI. But since I upgraded to core2duo, I haven't seen that strange behavior till now.

Chaos ? do u feel the same too ??
