I personally installed and used it on Linux(Ubuntu 9.10) and Vista SP2 x64. Both the operating systems had their own pros and cons.

Linux (Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala)

The wiki at XBMC's site was pretty self explanatory and the apt-get saved me a lot of trouble during installation. Adding the repository saved me from importing keys. Installation was pretty straightforward, 45MB was the size of the installation package.

Upon initial run it stuttered a bit. I'm using the restricted drivers, ver 8.66 for my HD4850. After that setup was pretty easy. It has loads of options to configure and play around with.

Now the videos, all played beautifully, even the 1080P content too however the .ts files showed some playback problem. Due to my LCD TV's scaling issues, I wasn't able to play around with playback settings much. I could only play videos with Software renderer. All formats like .avi, .mkv, .mp4, all played well.

Sound department is where is showed its true grace. Even the stereo sound movies sounded bombastic as the audio option allowed me to send stereo audio on my 5.1 system evenly. I heard Bass in movies that wasn't there earlier and at levels I never heard my speakers(Creative T6060) produce before. This performance and that too in linux, which was always marred with issues in my case, I was happily surprised.

The playback of songs was good although audio levels were uneven. later on I found that there is Normalization option is Sound settings.

All I had were couple of FLAC, OGG, MP3 and a DTS ablum. All were played equally well except DTS files where the system froze up, unable to play the file.

In cae of Linux I say it trumps over commonly available media players and I can't comment about other Media Center suites as I've never used one before. :P

Windows (Vista SP2 x64)

The installer file was of 46.2 MB. Here too there is nothing much to report, interface is same as in Linux, however the performance difference is huge.

Video playback wasn't good at all. maybe due to its my screen or non-standard resolution(1360x768). I tried on other resolutions too like 1280x768, 1024x768 but result was same in all. The problem was that the playback screen shifted towards left leaving a considerable area blank and black in the right side of the screen.

The 1080P playback however was smooth in Windows case. The .ts files too played flawlessly.

In audio department there was no major improvement in contrast to the sound quality I get from WMP11. As expected the .dts files played here without any problem.

If the video playback issue is experienced by others too, I say stick to VLC, that's what I'm going to do. :cool2:
