XP booting Problems

Using winXP pro (sp2)
the pc hangs while booting sometimes.
on some other times, it boots absolutely okay.

whenever it hangs, i hit the reset button
and that temporarily solves the problem..

i need a permanent solution to it..
now be kind and don ask me to re-install.
tat is one soln. i'm well aware of. :ohyeah:

Just my 2 paise of info..... I have seen this happen on a friends computer when he had a disk in an optical drive. He always seems to have a disk in a DVD Rom drive which was the first boot device in the BIOS. I changed the first boot device from the optical drive to a HDD and the problem stopped.

At what point of the booting phase does it hang?
If it is immediately after u switch on , then there might be some problems with power supply (not able o handle initial load maybe).

not immediately...
it hangs after completion of 2-3 rounds of progress indicator during win xp loading
(well, i dunno how to put that in words, hope u'll understand ;))

i've got both my RAM modules checked..they are okay.

Tht cud b a problem with the OS not able to load or find a file on ur HDD....check or scan ur hdd for errors nd stuff.....tht cud be a problem
thts all i can think of ;)

It seems like a hardware problem to me....there could be some hardware conflict or some malfunctioning harware like a soundcard or a lan card....
better try refitting all the peripherals again....

Also can a faulty data cable be the cause??

hmm..never noticed tat...
will see it this time and post :P

Hmm,i had the same problem. But that was because my pc was infected with a boot sector virus. So i booted with my winxp cd and all was fine, try that out if ur mbr is corrupted.

i dont know if anyother people saw it or not
in 2-3 newer Systems i made previously, P4 socket 775 ones, If i have the speakers (altec AVS300 & higher)Adapter plugged into the UPS, it used to freeze after 2-3 rounds of the Progress bar. u all may have noticed a Lil "Chirp" sound sometimes at the progress bar Stage, the sound card is initialized at that Point. so i though may be the Speakers(if on at that time) may be causing something.
Still i say this issue is not confirmed to be there, just something clicked into my mind cos it did not happen when i keep the Apeaker Adapter's Source separate.

thanx mehargags,
even i thought its a sound driver related issue since recently i updated the sound drivers for my intel board. the news is that this thing is not happening for the past 2 days. Hopefully, its solved on its own. :P If it reoccurs, i'll try to rollback the drivers and see wat happens.

Nobody said it here, but QF try defragging. Use O & O Defrag to defragment your HDD.

It speeds up your comp like hell ! Trust me, 15-20% performance increase...

Yeah, if u defragment after a long time, u'll notice a great performance increase. But, that's not something that could cause booting probs under normal circumstances! :D

DEFRAGGING is the most Stupid & Bullshit concept. reduces the life of hard disk dramatically. I know many of u my not agree but i dont care abt that. I have solid opinion abt this.

Anyways - this booting problem has nothing to do with it. this problem rises due to some hardware Probe taking place at that stage of Loading

The problem returned once again... :(

So, re-installed XP this morning...was okay for 5-6 reboots (for driver/software installation) but the same problem returned once again. The PC hangs while booting. No HDD activity during that time. Scanned disk but no problems there. PC boots okay in safe mode but in normal mode, it takes 4-5 resets to boot properly. What could be the problem?? I've tried selective start up without start up items and 3rd party services.

Any software to let diagnose the problem? Something that will be able to tell the specific stage at which booting fails or point the driver/software thats causing the problem??

help me out plz.

Windows XP has boot logging ability built into it. Use F8 and then choose the 'Enable Boot Logging' option. The Boot Logging text is recorded in the Ntbtlog.txt file in the %SystemRoot% folder.
