Hello,

I have a pretty old zenith machine with a intel 810e mobo.

Recently there was some trojan was copied to my machine through a infected pen drive. Due to this, I was not able to open any of the security sites, like norton, mc'afee and otehr antivirus sites. I tried scanning the machine with AVG Anti virus and Trojan Hunter, but they could not detect anything.

So I decided to format my machine using my XP Pro installation disc. I booted from the disk, formatted (quick) the partition and started with the installation. At one point, after entering all the details and CD Key, the setup halted, warning that there is an attempt to write back to the machines read only memory and I should restart the computer.

Thereafter I restarted the computer, and the BIOS screen started showing some weird characters and the machine refuses to boot even with the bootable CD. It gives some file not found error and setup cannot be continued.

What should I do now?? Is the BIOS corrupted?? Can a trojan be so destructive??

Please help with your advice guys..

It seems that your BIOS file is corrupted hence it couldnt even POST...It would display in screen saying that .ROM file is missing..See if you could update your BIOS or else check if you have the CD which contains the BIOS file...
Also it doesnt make sense to even repair your mobo since its very old based on socket 370..:)

Upgrade seems your best option if none of the methods work...:)

Sorry for updating this thread after such a long time.. The problem was traced and guess what it was so small that I almost ignored it. It was due to the dying BIOS battery!! Silly!
