DVR buying suggestions

I am looking for a good DVR solution for my Dad. Main usage is to record cable T.V shows.

From usability point of view, I have the following desireable points:

1) Quality of the recording should be comparable to the source.

2) An inbuilt reusable storage would be preffered. Minimum 10 hrs of high quality Video. A DVD based DVR can be considered if there isn't any good choice in the inbuilt HDD based DVRs.

3) operating it should be user friendly. Even a non-geek should be comfortable with this.
I recently bought one Sandisk Vmate, but it lacked in two areas: quality of the recording was not acceptable to my Dad(although it just does the job) and 2)using it was a little geeky. It was really cheap and had some added use cases than the regular DVRs, so I was tempted to buy it in the first place.

Now planning to sell it off and would like to buy a DVR which is capable of recording high quality analogue Cable T.V, and operating it is easy. Can source it from the U.S/U.K also, so you can reccommend international models also. Haven't fixed any budget on this but I guess $300 or Rs 12000 would be fine.
